You could have look at set attribute vop. https://www.sidefx.com/docs/houdini/nodes/vop/setattrib.html [www.sidefx.com]
I never used it, though.

Out of my head: If you promote an attribute (e.g. from points to primitive) you can specify how the values are merged (min, max and others). Of course, without deleting the former attribute.

I would rename the attribute to v (velocity) and treat it like rendering a geo motion blur.

It's hard to say, what's going on without an actual file. I never had these issues. It sounds way too long.
Is it the loading or the displaying that needs as long? Is the traditional OBJ context faster?

Is it possible that you have copied houdini's native sphere primitives or packed geometry? If yes, these should be converted to 'real' polygons first to be recognized by most other applications or even 3rd party renderers. I suppose, this happens in the background as well, when you activate these switches?

You could use the pin-icon as well. This will lock the window to the current hierarchy level.

These are great insights, thank you very much. I appreciate it a lot.
I have a follow up question:
Using karma with the karma rop (circumventing Solaris and sticking to the old obj-workflow), is this an option in your opinion? What are the drawbacks? I suppose the time to first pixel will be affected and the snappiness gets lost? Or is this no problem at all?
Thanks guys!

mattwAh, really? This is great to know! I had in mind, you can switch seats only for a few times a year. Thanks for that info.bolliliOur login licensing allows the same benefits as steam. You can login from wherever and whenever you want.

Pixelised
I think the fact RS isn't available to H20 just yet means more and more people are trying Karma.
What do you mean by that? RS for h20 is already available since the beta.

There is one advantage with the steam licence, though:
You can log in and out with your steam client whenever and wherever you want. Good for people who switch between more than two computers or operating systems. Sidefx' licence doesnot allow that, but works on two systems in parallel (single user, though).
EDIT: As CGxaio stated below, this advantage is available through sidefx' login-licensing, as well.

I am using redshift for quite a while now and I like it. It's fast, the houdini integration is really good and feature wise, it suits my needs.
I am a freelancer with a single workstation and three nvidia gpus. Mostly no USD/solaris. No heavy stuff for the most part.
I would like to hear what you guys think about switching to karma XPU. What are the (dis)advantages in terms of speed, tweaking and ease of use?
As I am no render expert at all, I always liked redshift's autosampling feature. Afaik, this is not yet implemented in Karma, right?
What else should I be aware of?
Cheers

You may only get biased opinions here, it's a Houdini dedicated forum, after all.
Your self description sounds like Houdini fits your profile exactly, though.

Lighting is in obj - or where you want it to be.
You could pull your scene (or parts of it) procedurally into Solaris and continue to work (incl lighting) from there, if you want. I am no expert with that, but I tried it and it worked pretty well. For my kind of projects usd workflow is over the top, generally. But, imho it's by no means complicated to go there if you need some features from it without building everything in Solaris from the ground up, first.

Can't comment on the other topics. But you can use karma without touching Solaris. Have a look: https://www.sidefx.com/docs/houdini/nodes/out/karma.html [www.sidefx.com]

Of course you can.
Try to recreate your workflow in houdini and ask specific questions when you get stuck.
