if the Cube only has gravity applied (which would be a force of (0, -9.8, 0) ) ...then why would it move in any other direction?
there is likely a step in whatever tutorial you're following that adds some force that you've missed.

with Houdini 18.5 some aspects of the Autorigs were refactored, and this work was planned for the face rigs, but with the advent of KineFX it was decided that the time it would take refactoring them would be better spent on newer KineFX based workflows, including facial rigging.

CHOPs also supports MIDI - so if your max patch can send midi you can use that to drive whatever you'd like

I exported the AutorigsSettings from your Rig and built a new rig, but I can't reproduce the errors you're reporting…

I have 32 versions of Houdini currently installed (I should get rid of some
)
from H16.0 to 18.0
all are unique and run on the same licence.
you should be fine installing a daily build along with a production build.
