Hi everyone,

I’d like to share a Houdini tool I’ve been working on called **Universal Asset Library (UAL)**.

The goal is simple: make it easier for Houdini artists to discover, preview, download and bring 3D assets into their workflow without constantly switching between different websites, asset libraries and folders.

What is Universal Asset Library?

UAL is an asset discovery and management workflow designed for **Blender and Houdini artists**.

The Houdini version provides a central interface for finding and working with assets from supported online sources as well as managing local assets.

The workflow is:

SEARCH → PREVIEW → DOWNLOAD → IMPORT → CREATE

Why I built it

As a 3D artist, I found myself repeatedly doing this:

Search for an asset → open a website → find the asset → download it → locate the files → organize them → import them into Houdini.

When working with lots of assets, that becomes a repetitive part of the workflow.

UAL is designed to reduce that friction and keep asset discovery closer to Houdini.

Houdini features

• Search and browse supported asset sources
• 9+ supported asset platforms/sources
• Asset previews
• Search and filtering
• Online asset browsing
• Local asset library
• Asset download workflow
• Import workflow
• Drag-and-drop workflow
• Centralized asset management
• Houdini-focused interface

Houdini workflow

The basic workflow is:

1. Search

Find the type of asset you need.

2. Preview
Review assets before downloading them.

3. Download
Download the asset through the supported workflow.

4. Import
Bring the asset into Houdini.

5. Create
Continue working without leaving your production workflow unnecessarily.

Blender support

UAL is also being developed as a **Blender addon**, with the same overall goal of creating a consistent asset workflow across Blender and Houdini.

Blender and Houdini versions have their own DCC-specific interfaces and workflows.

Free to use

UAL is currently available as a **free tool**.

Looking for feedback

I’d especially like feedback from Houdini artists who regularly work with:

• Large asset libraries
• Environment assets
• Materials and textures
• HDRIs
• Scanned assets
• Production asset collections

What would make an asset browser like this genuinely useful in your Houdini workflow?

I’d love to hear what features you would want to see next.

Thanks for checking it out!
