Hi!

I'm doing the particles tutorial in the Magic of Houdini book, page 172 and I can't see the color in the render.

I don't find where is my mystake.

- in the copy SOP I changed the asterisk for CD and Alpha.
- I enable the Use Template Point Attributes, in the attribute panel (I'm not sure, in the book he say toggle on the Copy Template Point Attributes parameters, I don't find this).
- In the shader node I've add the Vex layered shader in the surface field.

I render and I have just gray color.

If you can help me, it will be very appreciate!

I'm assuming you are using 9.1 for this example.

In the copy sop parameters there are 3 folders;
Copy, Stamp , Attribute

In the Attribute folder turn on “Use Template Point Attributes”, then in the
“To Point, Set” field put “Cd” which represents the colour attribute coming from the pop network.

Make sure the render flag is on the copy sop and render.
“gravity is not a force, it is a boundary layer”
“everything is coincident”
“Love; the state of suspended anticipation.”

Your image didn't show up the first time I saw this post so I missed that you were using 8.

If followed the instructions and it works fine for me. Go into your pop network and make sure the display and render flags are set at the bottom of the network chain.
The clue that this might be the problem is that I don't see the colour in your viewport illustration. You're colour should show in the viewport.

I found the problem.

When I change the color in the Alpha tab of the POPs Color node, it change the color in the Color tab.
That is why in the render (and the viewport) it was gray.

Now I have the color but not the alpha.

How change the Alpha color without it affect the Color tab ?

Thanks in advance!

you could easily put down a second color node to adjust alpha separate from color.

And as an aside, unless a company has asked you to learning Houdini 8 for them, it might be worth it for you to try downloading the latest version of Houdini 9. There have been a lot of changes since Houdini 8.

Thanks Allegro!

I append another color node and I get this. I don't see where is my mystake.

In fiew time I will be ready to work for ILM.

I use Houdini 8 because I had many problems with Houdini 9 (I use H9 since I registered on this site… since four months I think).
My hard disk is split in two, I have H8 and H9 on my computer
I have an old video card, this certainly don't help and I don't have money to buy a better one.
But this week I found that when I maximise the single viewport and return to normal view, the RBD work correctly in H9.
With Houdini 8 I don't have problems, H9 seem too charged.

P.S. The Magic of Houdini book and Gnomon DVDs use Houdini 8, and I find more easy to learn with it. (I prefer the nodes look in H8).
