Hey,

first post to this board

Well, I'm not able to get houdini to run on my ubuntu 9.04 32 bit system. Installation works fine until I type “houdini” to launch the app. Then it says “cannot execute binary”. I assume this is a 32bit/64bit issue?
At the download-page for the apprentice there's no way to say whether you want it for 32 or 64 bit. Should that file work on both? I'm a bit suspicious since it says “64” somewhere in the filename of the file I downloaded…

I hope there's someone who's had the same problem and solved it somehow

Greetz,

mg.

edit: yes, I spent some time searching this board but I didn't find a solution. If there is, point me to the thread please

You need the download titled Ubuntu 7.04 gcc4.1 with “i686” in the filename.

Here is a direct link. http://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_download&Itemid=208&page=license&version=10.0&build=424&platform=linux_i686_gcc4.1&format=tar.gz [sidefx.com]

Side Effects doesn't build a 32 bit package for ubuntu 9.04, so this is the next usable package.

thx, alan. that did the trick.

I've been able to start houdini now, got some errors and followed the instruction to delete the libs in install-dir/hsvg/. Now I can see the UI but when clicking buttons it takes a long time until houdini reacts… any ideas?

though I can see Houdini finally, the console gets a flood of errors. last one is this:
X11 Error(9): BadDrawable ( invalid Pixmap or Window parameter )

One user posted his solution was to update his ATI driver. I use a NVIDIA card, so this might not be the solution for me Is there a rule of thumb which driver-version works best with houdini? I'm using a Geforce 9600M GT.

Have you installed a proprietary Nvidia driver, or do you have whatever comes with Ubuntu by default? Check if you have direct rendering capability.

glxinfo | grep direct

Otherwise I'm not really sure since I haven't used Ubuntu since 7.10.

I have to admit that I don't have a proprietary nvidia driver. I'll try that when I come home tonight…

Thanks again for your help!

hey alan,

i just checked and I have direct rendering enabled. Next think I did was to install the latest nvidia driver and houdini runs *much smoother now. Not perfect yet but I'll have a look at older drivers and such. Thx, bro
