I purchased a new copy of 3d World and there was a copy of Houdini Apprentice on it.

When I tried to load it, the keys necessary were easy to obtain but the Server key won't work properly. I wonder if the software needs to be run from a server since I am attempting to run it standalone.

Any ideas?

May I know how did you obtain the keys? If it's from the Non-Commercial License server, may I know what SERVER name & code did you type?
