This is so simpler than you think !
I made a very simple project for you , But you can use particle system for trails or using metaballs instead of simple polygon object to achieve better result (sticky drop pixels).
Also I made a pixel man dancer with this effect too :

I don't know you checked this file or no.
But a very important tip is sometimes for object's with a little distance you take problem with PointFromVolume SOP . Specially on fonts you should see that some additional points generated in outside of the fonts and that's not what we want.
In this case you should generate some points in Bounding Box of your object , Then use Group from Geometry method in the Group SOP for grouping inside points and finally delete outside points with Delete SOP.
This method is so clear for Pixelizer effects :idea: :wink:
