Aligning pivot to geometry so that it scales correctly

Using the $CEX/Y/Z in pivot obviously only centres it, so how would I get it to orientate to the geometry so that it doesn't scale skewed.

Ok I found a way of fudging it manually; pressing the ‘ key and rotating the pivot. Would be nice if there’s an accurate way of doing it, but that works.
