Hello,

I am dead set on using Houdini for game development in UE4 after the Twitch presentation last Thursday. Incredible.

I've been using Houdini for about 6 months so I feel I have the basics down. I come from Maya and Zbrush.

But I have never been able to get anything besides a static mesh to show up in UE4.

I was given a sample scene from the Tree People group in Denmark. They have been able to get some sort of tree grouth animation into UE4, but the process they took to get it in is a little over my head. (I have attached a screenshot of the node network below).

Is there some kind of beginners guide for Houdini in UE4?? Like the stuff that was shown in the Twitch presentation. Is that all Houdini 16?

I haven't really be able to find anything about actually getting this cool stuff into UE4 here, or Digital Tutors, or Lynda.

Hey!

I'm glad you liked the stream and that it helped you make a decision! The Vertex Animation Stuff in particular is indeed coming in 16. But you can try getting a regular alembic cache going into UE4 right now.

The main ways of getting animation data are converting it to some sort of skeleton, alembic or textures.

We're planning on making lots of training material for the new features, but in the meantime I can recommend the following videos if you want to learn some basics.

These aren't unreal specific but teach you some good fundamentals

Thank you very much, Luiz! I finally have an understanding of packing geometry for rigid body destruction in UE4. I have been able to successfully export alembic for 4.13. I continue to explore exporting dynamic animation the right way!

Very glad to hear we are just on the cusp of this pipeline. That gives me another solid week to ramp up my skills in anticipation of Houdini 16.
