When I read the licensing for Houdini. I get the sense I cannot assets for an unreal project. Is it possible to create assets for unreal without spending 300 dollars? I'm still learning the tool. I've watched several video and taken some of the training. So I've been trying to use Houdini in my work flows. When I imported my terrain it refused to load.

Never mind. I think I have figured out the answer to this. I can make regular assets and export them as FBX's and use those in Unreal however, I cannot use Houdini engine to import and use my terrain this way. I will need to upgrade to indie.

. I can make regular assets and export them as FBX
please refer to this comparison table where FBX is listed as import only in apprentice (along with .usd and .abc)
however apprentice can export .obj

Hi Tamte, as a new user of Apprentice. My frustration comes in comparison chart doesn't hold much meaning until it start bouncing off some its walls. I found an article buried on Houdini's site that explicitly talks about the limitations. So I either purchase a license or move on.

This project I'm presently working does not really need a lot of procedural components at this time for world building. With the restrictions on the export I can't even bring a couple of tutorials into empty map and check them out. Its hard to see what you can do with a tool until you do it. This opens the door to for being able possible get around previous limitations of the project.

Sure you can find 100 posts of people saying just do it. You can go on any support forum and find people parroting the same thing. That is hard to translate to your workflow.

I am not a 3D modeler. I have no aptitude for Photoshop. Houdini was possibly my first shot at maybe building custom assets for my unreal project.

That chart was not meant as an answer to your question but mostly to point out that FBX export is not stated to be supported so if you had plans to exchange fbxs as stated that may not be possible

Thank you for that.

That realization lead me to do a few well phrased google searches which lead me to a part of the site that stated in uncertain terms what I need to bring assets out of Houdini. Sorry about the rant. It wasn't directed at you more towards I was finally making progress on my game and hit my next road block.
