A bit of confusion about Curve SOP's "Orient Mode"

I drew a simple Bezier curve and Sweep'ed (swept?) a square around it. And I'd like to twist this square tube:

According to the HUD hints, I Shift+LMB an anchor point. Now it shows two different kinds of handles: A white circle around it, and a full rotation handle with X/Y/Z axes.

It's a bit confusing to me tho. As far as I know, the only meaningful way to "orient" an anchor point on a Bezier curve is to rotate around its Z axis. In other word, the white circle is all I can do. Why does it show the full rotation handle?

I guess that the X Y Z handles simply provide another way for you to manipulate the orientation. The actul impact occurs when the white handle changes in response to the adjustment made by the XYZ handles.

My guess is because you have the "Toggle Transform handle" toggled on, pressing "K" should hide the xyz handles.
