Memory allocation error!

Hi, until just recently I was running the apprentice version of Houdini 6 on an old PC with 512mb ram, all my project that were created on the machine ran ok, slow as, but ran. I’ve just upgraded my machine to 1GB of ram and dual processors. However, I’m now find that I’m getting a ‘memory allocation error’, shortly before Houdini crashes, when working with fairly heavy models. These same models ran fine on my old machine with less memory.

What could cause this?

Is there a setting in Houdini that controls memory usage?

Many thanks,

JT

Not really, apart from the compositing settings. Houdini just works with whatever the OS says it has. You don't say what OS you're running, but I'll assume Windows…and it should auto-detect and use your memory just fine. You say you “upgraded” to a dual cpu - it's very rare to upgrade a system to two cpus…you need a specific board for that and there's a whole bunch of issues that can come with mixing two cpus built at two different times, even the same model. Also, what you describe could be memory problems - go here [memtest86.com] and run that program on your computer. It's perfectly safe, doesn't overwrite anything - just tests your memory.

Overall, it sounds to me like you have system problems - probably hardware related…

Cheers,

Hi, sorry, I should have been more clear. Its a brand new system, new chips, new mainboard, new ram. I'm running XP Pro. I'm just experiencing issues with Houdini, no other software problems.
