It's the only really, truly procedural software out there, meaning unlike Maya and other packages you don't get recommends to “delete history” every once and a while to make sure your file works. You *can* commit things so that you'll need to go back and rebuld if you choose, but it's completely procedural from the ground up. Everything you do can be tweaked later on, instead of having to go back and re-do things.
Also, it's got lots and lots of “back doors”. You can get at most everything. This makes it very attractive to TD's too…
Cheers,
J.C.

But its history and coming into being havent got an answer, Can you go on to complete the whole questions?
Why did they name the software as “ houdini”, whats its meaning? who designed it? What situation is it using in the movies and tv area?
Thanks in advance.
download and read this fine piece of doc for houdini information.

thank ye for the compliment a.b.h.
please do check out those docs if you want. i have to insert a caveat here that they are all very early versions of material that has become a part of the book. so, parts of them are incomplete and there are even a few errors that i noticed whilst looking through them the other day. the good news is that the updated, corrected, and more complete versions are in the book and it will be out soon.

I once heard someone say it was called Houdini because it will get you out of any tight fix. Can't remember who said it or how true it is, but it's a good name for that reason.
It's aimed squarely at the film and tv industry but we use it for high-end multimedia.
Personally I'd recommend it for anything where you need real power solutions - if you want quick and dirty then probably best going for one of the cheaper options with more prebuilt solutions. Only my personal opinion.
