I'm trying to understand how the Implicit Plane mode works in the Static Object DOP.
According to the documentation:
"Calculate the bounding box for the geometry, and create a volumetric representation that divides that box along its smallest axis. Everything below that plane is considered inside, and everything above is outside."
From my understanding, this means the plane should be created along the smallest axis of the bounding box, effectively “cutting” the geometry in half along its thinnest direction.
For example, if the bounding box is:
X = 5
Y = 5
Z = 1
I would expect the plane to be oriented based on the Z axis (i.e., an XY plane), since Z is the smallest axis.
However, in my tests, no matter how I change the geometry:
different bounding box proportions
rotating the source geometry
enabling/disabling Use Object Transform
the resulting plane always appears to be aligned with the Y axis (horizontal ground plane), as shown in the screenshots.
So I’m unsure whether:
I misunderstood how the “smallest axis” is defined in this context, or
This is the expected behavior in the current Houdini version, or
This might be a bug or a limitation of the Implicit Plane implementation.
I'm using Houdini .
I would really appreciate clarification on how the axis selection for Implicit Plane is actually determined internally.

Implicit Plane always uses Y axis, not smallest axis
