Houdini Indie and Apprentice » no license for Mantra

Yeah I have no problem having only 1 instance running at a time, but in the past you could fire off 3 renders and not attend to the machine again until they're all done (because multiple requests rendered in parallel). That functionality has been lost - now you have to manually render each pass sequentially. It would be a huge improvement, back to previous efficiency, if multiple render requests could organize themselves to render sequentially so that I could leave the PC and have lunch for example, and not hang around checking every few minutes and firing off the next render.

It sounds like you need to install a later version of Houdini as the license server (hkey) is bundled with Houdini…

sorry if this is obvious - but did you set an output file? if so, it's rendering to that..

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Shading layers using Material Shader Builder?

I don't see how the Material Shader Builder could be used to create layers, also I don't see the ‘layered surface’ shader in H11. Things must have changed - what is the latest method of overlaying shaders?
(I want to do the colour layer procedurally, and overlay a hand-painted dirt layer.)
Thanks!

hi, there is an FAQ that you should be able to find via google, it will answer your questions.
The service itself is free, but of course the machine usage attracts charges from Amazon.
The render limitations of whatever license you use are maintained.

HQueue is the software that manages render farms, and it is not available with Apprenctice licensing, however cloud rendering is available with Apprentice.
You could buy multiple HD licenses and manually render on multiple local computers.

Hi,
This seems related to this issue [sidefx.com] which I have just logged a bug for.
If you install a 10.0.x version of Houdini I expect it would work in case that helps.

If I render at any more than 2 instances, the render outpaces the downloads, which entirely defeats the purpose of cloud rendering - I may as well just render on my own machine.
As mentioned above, the limitation is not my internet connection - it could be downloading 4x faster.
I guess this needs to be raised as a bug.

I am sure the problem is not Houdini itself, but something else installed with it, like the cloud rendering server. I'm going to log a bug report.
In my working environment (11.0.733 first installed), I can run any version of Houdini from my different drive partitions to render to the cloud. In my non-working environment (11.1.108 first installed) none of the exact same binaries of Houdini render to the cloud.

I have 15 instances rendering in parallel, but frames are being downloaded serially with only 1 active download instance, which is only using 1/4 of the network download capacity.
I'm sure I have seen multiple, parallel downloads before.
Even with using 5 instances the rendering gets ahead of the downloads.
Is this right? Anything I can do?

In the scene view, press ‘d’ to open display options -> background -> set an image and check ‘show background’. This shows the image in the viewport, from where you can use the camera controls to frame your shot. Once rendered, composite the output onto the background plate in COPS.

So I installed Windows 7 on to a new SSD and am unable to render to the cloud. However, it continues to work under the previous Windows install on the old drive.
I have tried as many variables as possible and see no practical difference between the two environments. Also, I can manually start instances via the AWS console. I have tried with 3 versions of Houdini (11.1.118 as latest).
Are there any common issues to look into? I have set windows up as I normally would.

In order to calculate the vector between the rigid body object and the target object in the SOP solver, should I be looking at using a Point SOP?
Also, do I just apply the SOP Solver in the DOP chain (like a gravity DOP)?
