Hello
I'm sorry it look complicated
But if you are importing an object with arbitrary orientation it's not possible for the machine by itself to decide what would be the correct orientation...
If you were building the stuff yourself in Houdini you could animate it in a very simple way at obj level like in my screenshot
You will find many other way of doing it in Houdini , that's the beauty of the software it will let you find your own solution for a task .
I wish you a good learning in Houdini

Hello
I think in this case you want more the axis of rotation that could be defined by the face the gun is touching than the Center of mass.....
then you could just create a ident() matrix and rotate it around this axe ...you will have to get also the centroid of the base of the gun .... selecting both the machine face and the base gun you could have something semi procedural ....
I have made a demo scene , check

Hello
Does anyone know if it's possible to change the file Browser inside houdini to have its default sorting set to most recent instead of by name ?
It's a detail but as I'm always doing it manually to access my most recent file it would be useful !

you can have a surface like this with equal sized square from quad:

Hello
You can also use fillet node in sop to build round corner with nurbs
check the file
But also Nurbs isn't really developed in Houdini
the best would be to use the polygon approach with a square and polybevel the point

Apparently it's the mirrored part that are wrong
should be something like negative scale
the best would be to use a rig doctor before you do the animation
with initialize transform
but if you just change the mirror operation to be by rotation instead of by scale
it's allready working in windows viewer ;

Hello
it seams to be to control your up axis
it has to be the same geometry but displaced in your desired up direction
so if you just translate it up , every point on your curve will have an up orientation to be like {0,1,0}

Hello
You can extrude your geometry and make 2 group for front and back with different texture
or in rendering , i know for Redshift their is a RS state node than can switch the shader depending of the front or back
must be one also for Mantra or Karma
but i doubt you could do it in the viewport opengl ...

Hello
You've got to have your group name before the planar patch from curve and it will keep it
their is only in the simple planar patch that you can have pre made group by side.
