I have a basic RBD scene where an object reacts to a force, then bounces and rolls to a stop. I want the realism of the dynamics solution, but i would like to have the rigid body finish in (roughly) a certain location/orientation.
Is there any way to encourage it towards a goal?
(I realise this is counter to the idea of a physical simulation….)
Currently I am just changing variables slightly, re-running the simulation and hoping to get lucky

That's up to you. I don't think 12 is to be imminently released? The wording of the announcement suggested to me that it would be some time away.

Try extruding both shapes, so the cookie is operating on two 3d meshes. The product will naturally also be a 3d mesh, from which you could delete the unwanted polygons, returning your desired 2d shape.

Are you referencing your image sequence using $F, e.g. “frame_$F.tga”, or hard-coding the frame number e.g. “Frame_001.tga”? $F is a global variable referencing the current frame number and might be what you're looking for…

Hi Steve,
Do you mean it sometimes renders a blank, or incomplete frame? Mplay says (in red text) “Bad Image” when opening that frame?
I get that too, also using envlight. I first thought it was RAM or some other limitation of my PC, but it also happened when rendering to the cloud.
FWIW I am using latest H11 production build on Windows 7 64bit, Core2Duo 2ghz (E5200), 4GB RAM.

Hi, check the Render Scheduler tab and kill any active renders (the culprit might be an unfinished render view for example).
Something changed recently to cause this; I used to be able to have multiple, simultaneous renders running off one (HD) license. I guess that got tightened up.

Did anyone debug Serg's shader for H11? It would be soooo useful, but I have no idea where to begin.
(learning how it works and fixing it are very different challenges)

If your scene has heavy image textures you could try converting them to .rat otherwise it needs to be done implicitly by Houdini.

Hi. I'm almost certain a license is consumed, and you need to release it to use it on another platform.

You could composite and export single frames (hint, in the ROP file output put frame_$F.bmp - it will substitute the $F with frame number), then use Virtualdub to render to a movie format.

Hi, it sounds like you are clicking the render icon bottom-left of the main window. Instead go to the Output view, lay down a Mantra ROP (Render Operator) and set it to a file location. then click the render button on the Mantra node. Check the help for precise details. good luck

Another option is to right-click a node, ‘save geometry’ (to .bgeo format) and then re-import with a File sop.

Let's say you had a chain like this: File SOP -> edit SOP
If you lock the edit SOP (the red button), the SOPs in the chain prior to the edit node become redundant; the preceeding information is stored in the locked SOP.
It sounds like you didn't lock a node beyond the file SOP, and have not included the geometry file, so the geometry is missing to another user.

Hi. Look at the “shading layer” SOP. In a VEX (shader building) node you can add a shading layer input to make that shader correspond to the geometry.

Hi, without being able to look at your scene, the short answer is to look at the Mantra ROP (Render Output) -> “add extra image planes”. Render to a .pic(nc) format to capture the extra data.
Then in COPS (compositing) use Channel Copy to extract the channels you want and composite them together.

I now have a permanent Tree view pane on my Houdini desktop. Thanks Tomas.. can't believe I didn't think of this before.
To the OP; try “split pane left/right”, and make one of them a treeview (sorry if that's obvious). And then window - desktops - save desktop when you are happy with it.
