In this lesson, you will work with Houdini's modeling tools. You will learn how to work interactively in the viewport and also how to use the node view to generate geometry procedurally.

So far, this is the best intro to modeling in Houdini that I've been able to find. Thanks!

Thanks for your simple explanation of procedural modeling in Houdini. It makes me excited to continue and learn more.

nice vid and going through all the basic is very educational if you are new to houdini but the problem is that 'effectively' word is echoning in my ear and it has been 2 days since i watched this vid

I really appreciate the way you teach. Thanks!! :D

I'm a programmer. A little correction from my side.

.. is not a current directory. .. is a parent directory. In the video on 26:06 you are inside of 'move_to_grid'. When you type .. you go to the parent directory which is 'obj'. Then in 'obj' you go to 'box2/sizey'. Try to type 'cd ..' in command prompt in windows, you will see how it works.

Why the lollipops were angled on a rubber toy and were not on a pig head and a the sphere? Lollipops were attached to points and points have no direction.

Very good tutorial! You like the word "effectively", right. :D

    • rohandalvi 4 年 前  |

      Yes.
Effectively and basically. My two most favouritest words in the whole world. :P

Right here waiting for more tutorial videos. Thank you so much.

Thank you so much for your tutorial; from 25'00, i doesn't work for me, when i copy and paste the references... I've tried several times, but when i scale the box, for example, it is still going through the grid... By the way you have a very nice way of teaching!

    • sebaberu 4 年 前  |

I've finally got it... forgive me

      • sebaberu 4 年 前  |

The problem was simply in the geometry node i had selected the box, but not displayed the transform node...

Effectively, that was, you know, essentially a pretty effective tutorial, yeah ;). Thanks for the tutorial really cool stuff!

Effectively, that is my Essential catch phrase, :P

Glad you found the tutorial useful.

I also use the word Basically a lot. I'm disappointed you didn't mention that. :D

At 54:39, how did you get it to show only the scatter points? I cannot seem to find the hotkey or information online for it. Thanks in advance!

Never mind. For some reason, it was still showing the wireframe of the sphere's mountain level, though I didn't have the clicked to show (sorry, I don't remember all the terms - so much!). But yeah, after clicking them on and off again, they finally turned off, and I was able to see the scatter points. Realized it was something to do with the sphere itself because after adding the line and ticked the Display and Template, it still showed the sphere wireframe.

I get a "Fatal error" every time I try to implement a "Poly Extrude" and shuts the software down....

I had that before too. I got a newer computer with a better graphics card and it doesn't happen anymore. I could do all kinds of things in Houdini, but it was when I went to Polyextrude that Houdini would crash.

Before this tutorial i was pretty scared of Houdini. now i feel all the things that i was missing in other 3d softwares is the basic of houdini. no wonder its widely used by artists.

Awesome tutorials Rohan... i'm just starting out but these are a great introduction to everything. Thanks!

Thank you for the tutorial sir. I have one issue though. When I create a transform node and move the box, Houdini creates an edit node between the box node and transform node. And it doesn't move the whole box but moves one side of it which distorts the box. Please help me fix it.

The only reason that's happening is because you're accidently selecting points or polygons in the viewport.

You can delete the edit node and in the transform node make sure there's nothing written in the group area on top. If it has anything in it, mostly likely you'll see some numbers, just delete those. Then everything will be fine.

        Thank you. You're very helpful.

I created "line node" and "group by range node" to select only top point. I set the group type to "Points" and moved "End" slide to 1 but neither is selecting or deselecting any points. So I just moved on to copying spheres and it's copying spheres on every points. I replayed that part millions times and followed the exact same steps but nothing changes. What should I do?

    "effectively"

  • Kief 2

Why are you keeping templates in play just to give yourself two buttons to click instead of one every time you switch nodes?

it a very old habit from the time I started learning Houdini in version 8. You don't need to follow it. It just muscle memory, difficult to break. :)
