Hi everyone!

In this tutorial series, we will recreate the “Gommage” FX inspired by Expedition 33 in Houdini.

We’ll create a custom growth effect on the meshes using a solver, and use it to “destroy” the character and to source the particles.

Then, we’ll build a particle system for the petals, along with some basic geometry and textures in COPs to instance them onto the particles.

Finally, we’ll assemble everything in the Stage, render it with Karma, and bring the sequence back into Copernicus for some basic compositing.

You can find the starter project to download, but feel free to use you own meshes ^^

3D Artist & Houdini Certified Instructor with years of experience in CGI, motion graphics, and procedural FX. I specialize in Houdini-based workflows — from particle systems and simulations to creative coding and generative visuals — and I enjoy breaking things apart to understand how they work (and then sharing that process with others). Alongside my own projects, I create tutorials and workflow content focused on practical, real-world Houdini techniques. Whether it's a deep-dive into a specific node setup or experimenting with unconventional approaches, I'm always looking for new ways to push what's possible procedurally. I'm currently available for freelance and contract work — feel free to reach out if you're looking for a Houdini artist or technical instructor for your next project.
