TOTAL DURATION: 1h 48m

This course is intended to introduce learners to the high level concepts of path tracing as it is used in offline render engines. This course will be as renderer-agnostic as possible, and aims to be useful no matter what renderer you use. In it, we will cover the camera and image plane, primary and secondary rays, BSDFs/BRDFs, and a little bit about the math used in modern path tracers. The course will also touch on the concepts behind rendering effects such as: depth of field, motion blur, subsurface scattering, and volumetric effects. After taking this course the learner should be able to understand the high-level concepts of path tracing, and be able to apply these ideas to any modern path tracer.

Hi Peter - I'm not seeing any of the objects you display in the tutorial after opening the project file. The error message I get on the “edu_path_tracing_scene1” node is "This node is using an incomplete asset definition. It will not function properly until the asset library containing the full definition is installed”. Also most of the wires between the "edu_path_tracing_simulator1" node and the null nodes immediately below aren't connected. I notice also that the KUG example file nodes are trying to point to a "...rendergallery.db" which I don't believe I have. As instructed in the tutorial I have SideFX Labs and SideFX EDU installed.

Any help would be very much appreciated,
    Cheers,
    Gavin

Hey Gavin! I just downloaded the link from this course, and checked it out on my new machine which didn't have the EDU Tools on it yet. I have the same issue you described when the EDU Tools package is not being imported into Houdini. When it's properly installed, the error goes away. Double-check your application's top bar for an entry titled "Education". If you don't have that, the EDU Tools are not properly installed.

As far as the "rendergallery.db" file is concerned, I wouldn't worry about that. It's a file that the Render Gallery makes when you take snapshots, and it shouldn't affect the file in any way.

      Hope that helps!

Thanks for the very quick reply Peter - I think you're right. If you mean the top menu bar there is no menu item called "Education". When I select Update Toolset from the SideFX EDU shelf, and then select Update literally nothing happens. If I click Start Launcher I get a "No Houdini Launcher Found" dialog with the installation path to exactly where the launcher is sitting (/Applications/Houdini Launcher). I also went back through your video to see if I've missed a step....but I don't think you actually hit "Update" in the video so I'm not sure what is meant to happen...

You could just download the Houdini Education package from Github, and install it manually. Not sure why the updater isn't working.

Thanks Peter - the GitHub avenue worked. Very much appreciate your help.
