In this lesson, you will be introduced to the Houdini user interface and learn how to navigate the 3D scene view. You will also learn about Houdini's procedural workflow and how it will play a role in how you work with the nodes and networks.

Hi Rohan, we are very thankful for your tutorials that show Houdini's proceduralism. But I need a tutorial to learn basic character head modeling from start, both polygonal and NURBS, even not though to be procedural, because I have a project in what I need is just apply some vellum possibilities to geometry behavior for simulation of something I'll do physically, using 3D printings of this modeling. For now, I don't need to get into a broad Houdini learning curve. Can you help me? Thanks a lot!!

Great tutorial Rohan, good pace, I have a pen and paper handy for notes, and stop and start your lesson frequently to try new techniques on Houdini, but I am getting the knack down quickly. Thanks!

Really great intro...you assumed no prior knowledge, so it was really easy to follow. Much appreciated

I have a non-commercial version of Houdini, shortcut Shift + / for Fast Node Search doesn't work. Tried multiple times. Is it normal or any suggestion would be nice?

    • zmejka 4 years ago  |

Just installed the last version of Houdini. Every shortcut is shown in the tutorial now works. Sorry for the misinformation.

Great start to great software. Only gotcha is forgetting to uncheck the "add shader" button when creating the test rubber duck object. If you don't do that, the principled shader will have no effect!

This video is horrendous, this is not YouTube. I expect highly polished complete video tutorials not somebody fumbling through showing us the Houdini website to show concepts. I expect better from a company that has created software that can be used for VFX than somebody using screen capture software to build a tutorial. If this is all you are willing to put into for production value for your first intro to your users. I am not sure I made the correct choice.

If this isn't YouTube, why are you posting YouTube comment level dravel?

If you want to learn Houdini you need to be a bit more clever that posting comments like that on a video from one of the top Houdini tutors in the world...

      • richardcbarnes 3 years, 1 month ago  |

Quit being a rescuer. What I said is valid, and should be addressed. I paid a lot of money given my personal circumstances. To find that intro videos are of poor quality. As far as clever goes, you don't know me and you based this on a comment where I did not attack the individual. I complained about a problem I perceived. You are the one that attacked me because of some sense of misplaced honour.

I want the problem fixed. There will be no more replies for it is not productive.

        • bobc4d 3 years, 1 month ago  |

you said you "paid a lot of money . . ". but this is a free tutorial so I do not understand your indignation, also apprentice is free unless you purchased Indie then that is on you. new users in Houdini should learn basics STARTING with the interface and how to navigate Houdini.

        • Farmfield 3 years, 1 month ago  |

What problem do you want "fixed"?

I think you missed the point here. You are complaining about one of the most appreciated Houdini tutors there is. It has nothing to do with honor, it simply makes you look ridiculous.

I'd you don't like a specific tutor, watch someone else. You will find that list tutors are doing screen recordings, I have no clue what you expected but if you want to learn Houdini you need to focus on actually learning stuff, not whining about a specific tutor...

I don't understand why you're complaining about the quality of a really well executed and concise free course that gives you and has given many others in the past a very good base understanding of the application. There are hundreds of paid for courses available on many platforms, including here.

If you're referring to purchasing the software before learning it, unfortunately you should have done further research and learned it before spending money that could affect your personal circumstances.

Not trying to attack you, just not sure what you want "fixed" with this course?

        • richardcbarnes 3 years, 1 month ago  |

People are reading into what I said. I specifically stated" I expect highly polished complete video tutorials" I did not attack the video author, I expected this to be taken as it was meant, not as an attack on an individual as I stated earlier. I have already located a professional training series for the software and I am using that to learn. This was more about the company than the individual not providing what I expect. I expected better and my frustration is at the quality and the company, not the person.

I learned something from this. People read what they want, don't ask questions and are quick to defend an individual even though the individual was never at issue. I believe they feel affronted that someone took issue with something they like.

Guys can u help me? When I place objects in my scene they have a wireframe applied to them, but only the outer layer of the object, I searched all google for this, I cannot find anything anywhere, I can only see the new created objects when I select the Primitive Type as NURBS or Bezier...I did nothing to the program, I changed no settings, and it behaves different from what I see on the internet. Please help me on this, my head hurts.

Install studio drivers from nvidia. The latest game drivers have some problems. Or install an older version of the graphics drivers.
