I am new to Houdini so maybe I am doing something wrong but, I noticed that after a certain point, saving (overwriting) the scene I am working on, makes the file bigger and bigger.
I had a scene that was 300kb, then after a few saves grew to 17MB and finally to 300MB! The changes on the actual scene were minimal.
The 300MB scene crashed Houdini, so I had to revert to a previous automatically saved scene to restore.
I have the latest Houdini version on OSX 10.6.8

perhaps it's another “quote-escaping” bug… these popped up quite a few times (last time I saw it in my assets) In some text fields, the double-quote get's “escaped” (a backslash added), and on each save another bunch backslashes added, etc. Just a guess, though.
