Trying to get rid of flicker when rendering specular objects

Hi, I am hoping this is some newbie mistake…

When I am rendering out my animation most of the objects with some specular highlights are flickering a bit. Mostly around the edges.

I've put a sample quicktime movie online that shows the more complex object on the left flickering, and the sphere on the right with the same shader being perfectly static. (both objects are polygons then subdivided).

Anyone know why this is happening or more importantly… how it can be stopped? Thanks.

Hmm, that's weird. Try turning up the sampling in mantra from the default 3x3 (I think the max is 8x8).

Are these objects totally still? If so try turning off Jitter in the ROP.

Also, higher super-sampling as already mentioned.

Another thing is make sure your normals are good. If you aren't sure, use a Facet SOP. I once had some weird edge flickering from a model from Maya and the normals were strange. A Facet SOP recalculated the normals and the flicker went away.

The combination of the facet sop and upping the super sampling helped a lot. It is still not perfect, but it's useable and I may just have to tweak the numbers more to get it there.

Thanks!

Whats your pixel filter set to? Perhaps using a higher or better pixel filter will smooth the flickering out.
