Terrain shading suggestions

I've made a procedural terrain using a SOP for displacement and later I applied a Mantra surface.
Now I'd like to color the terrain according to the slope profile, so that, for example, if the slope is <45° it's green, or else red.
I've tried using the globalNNormalBumpMap node to gather the normals and drive a ramp color through it without success (the object color was unaffected by my attempts).
Any chance to get some examples or hints? Thanks a lot!
