Trying to sim cells running through vein texture

I'm pretty new to Houdini, and am trying to simulate some biological looking footage. So far I'm just trying to see if I can displace a grid with a veined texture so that I can use a flip fluid to run through the channels of the displacement (it's my impression that bump maps do not actually change the primitive and that a displacement will although displacement doesn't change the grid in my perspective view) along with some instanced cells to act as rigid bodies. Is this way off? Any tips towards some tutorials or learning resources that would get me closer to my objective? Thank you in advance!
