just shooting bling here, it might be scale issue.
Houdini might be creating VDB from your geo and it might be using too much RAM resources.

I haven seen it before. Where VDB on wrongly scaled fur asset took 2miutes to cook. Once scaled properly, it took seconds.

Just try to hit escape in cca 5 seconds, that might kill the cooking.

I would also start taskmanager and watch RAM usage. If it goes up.
