I'm still confused how the different networks communicate with each other. I would assume in the mat network (VEX Builder) there would be some kind of group field in the principledshader to assign the material to?

So I have geometry from an imported FBX that I created in Maya. How do I assign different materials to the geometry groups?

Ok, got it. Click on the Material node in the Geometry node of the object. In the parameters tab, the bottom section contains “Material tabs” for material groups. After each ‘Group’ field is a ‘Material’ field where you can assign a shader.

I got confused wandering in the SHOP Network because funny enough, it's labeled as ‘materials’
