Is there a way to debug why mesh instances aren't importing?

my scene has terrain + unique polys + instanced static mesh assets.

you have to merge all 3 obviously and somehow that merge is breaking the instances. I run into this again and again and it's hell trying to figure out why they're breaking. If i don't put the unique polys into the merge that fixes it, but i can't see any attrib conflicts that should break anything, nor do i see any easily visible errors in the output log because it's an endless sea of garbage errors, so i'm pretty stumped. and i keep getting stumped on this again and again, so surely there's gotta be SOME foolproof way to export all 3 types of data into unreal without errors, right?
