how to edit material of layout point instances?

In the layout tool option tab,the reference and instance reference has no difference,why?
And if I want to edit the material using the Edit Material Network node,it won’t work.Is this a bug or limitation?

Another question,could you use layout tool to randomly paint different variants of same asset?
