Creating & Rendering Characters

Hi everyone i have a question about rendering characters. The link below shows a character made in Maya (Final fantasy Spirits within) but is still relevent. Why is her arm not creating artifacts when rendered ? As the geometery is intersecting.

From my experience of building characters the whole character should have a skin over it. I have seen a few characters split into sections but can still move joints no problem when rendering….

I'm guessing you are looking at an animation rig.

Lo-res proxy geometry that's used to approximate the ‘proper’ deformation of the hi-res mesh quickly. This allows the animators to be able to work without incurring the penalty of deforming the hi-res mesh.

Yea thats kinda what i though, so you reckon the high version is skinned as a whole?
