Shaping pyro effects

I am trying to make an explosion a bit like in here:

As you can see there a bits flying out and certain directions emit more dust than others.

What would be a good way to give “shape” to a pyro effect? I guess some kind of fields?

Would it be possible to drive parameters, for example boyancy direction, with an attribute from SOPs?

Well, I'm getting somewhere with adjusting point velocities, but I can't figure out an way to vary the amount of fuel per point…

I'm not very into fluids but I'd probably do it with particles since I find them much more controllable. But then again that might be since I'm no fluid expert.

Ah, they are more controllable but I'm not so good with getting nice-looking particles.

This is what I got so far. Maybe not so bad.
