Hi Zdimaria,
the link you provided me with was absolutely fantastic. The effects have been achieved with 3DS Max and relatively new Plug-in called Krakatoa.
I am aware of the capabilities of Krakatoa.
I would like to see something like that done in Houdini. I think, Houdini, which is a tool specifically designed for particles, should overcome even such a beautilful scenes as the one you showed me.
Kind regards,
Bunkai

Where can I find Houdini Volumetric Shaders, please, that could be used to render beautiful space nebulae, galaxies, etc?
Is there such a database available? Do you have any good book in mind, that covers this area well?
Thank you and kind regards.

Dear all,
Does it make to export millions of Houdini generated particles into Softimage and let them be rendered with Mental Ray?
Or, once the simulation is done in Houdini, is it meant to be rendered in Houidni environment, because there is no other package capable of rendering such big ammounts of particles?
If I can bring pacticles from Houdini 12 to Softimage 2012+, what will be the most appropriate fileformat?

Dear All,
What is the best file format to bring geometry, texturing, and animation from Softimage 2012+ to Houdini 12?
Thanks.

Houdini Lounge » Memory Recommendations - How to overcome 32GB limit

Dear all,
Although I have read, that minimum recommended memory for Houdini is 8GB, it looks like that is not enough.
On the other hand, affordable desktop solutions have hardware limits of 32 GB.
Is 32 GB just enough for complex particle effects? if I wish to overcome the limit of 32GB what options do I have? Is the only next step purchasing expensive workstation that can be 3000+ USD, or is there any acceptable workaround single user usage?

Hi Protozoan,
thank you for your response.
I have already searched, what are the possiblities for me. Surprisingly, i can not go higher than 32 GB. This it the current limitation for desktop PCs. If I wish to go more, then I have to purchase expensive workstation.
Is there any workaround of breaking the limit of 32 GB for Houdini? Or is 32 just ok even for nice renderings consisting of large amounts of particles?

Hi Sanostol,
Thank you for your response. Anyway, I currently work in Germany, in Brechtesgaden - beautiful place to be in.
Currently I have 8 GB RAM. How does this amount of memory stands from Houdini viewpoint? Is it terrible low, or is it acceptable for initial experimens?
As my configuration is a bit old, to purchase additional RAM, I will need to replace motherboad and CPU too. It will mean purchasing new PC for me.
If I need to find qood quality ifnormation, tutorias, etc.. is there any great webpage apart from sidefx.com and odforce.net?

Hi Zdimaria,
thank you for your response and feedback. Actually, I saw that video today - nice coincidence. :-)
Currently I learn Houdini Fundamentals, and watch 3DBuzz trainings on youtube.
Anyway, if anybody will be so nice to provide another great materials, examples, and ideas, i will be happy to hear.
It would be interesting to understand what is in the limits of Houdini, and what is too much. Anyway, is thre any limit of particles, Houdini can process in single scene?

Dear all,
I have been always fascinated movies like Star Trek and the beautiful space scenes. The volumetric nebulae, realistic galaxies, dust clouds, surfaces of the sun, etc…
Would you please help me to get to the right track. Where/how to start learning such effects? Have you seen any good publications and links on this topic?
For example, I especially like this sun's surface shot: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TOErr4xntHE&feature=related [youtube.com]
It is 6:12sec long movie, and to know what I mean, please fast-forward to 1:30sec. You will see there a 6-second sequence of beautiful fluid sun's surface simulation.
Is Houdini the right tool for such type of effects?
Any advice will help. Thank you.

Dear all,
It is usually said that Houdini is the most powerful particle software for development of movie like effects.
I believe it is, however, every product has its weaknesses and limitations. A time ago, I've seen one animation reel, which I consider as breathtaking.
https://vimeo.com/6794856 [vimeo.com]
As i do not know Houdini good enough to have my own opinion, would you advise, please, if Houdini is capable of such effects? If yes, is it easily capable, or here we reach the limitations of the software?
Would you be so kind and provide me with some examples of similar work done in Houdini? Anyway, this webpage is great, but is there any great portal focuses especially on visual effects and Houdini output?
Thank you and kind regards.
