Oops, my bad. I forgot that I had a texture set in the shader. There you get problems with pre-multiplication. Plugged in like shown in the picture all is working fine now. (I could also plug in the PNG directly, as the alpha is ignored.)
Thank you for your answer. Made me confront myself with the topic of pre-multiplication.

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Transition edge by using alpha channel of PNG

Hey there,
I use the alpha channel of a PNG to layer materials. However, you can see an edge in the fall off to transparency. In an image editor it's fine; there is a clean transition to the background. The arrow in the picture points on how it should look like. I know, when I make a second version with a white background, then on white you don't see an edge. But I hope there is a more flexible solution.

Technical Discussion » Unwanted Mantra nodes created?

Hi, I'm having the same problem, that is, that Mantra nodes get created on their own. Can't say when, but over 250 so far.
Any solution?
Edit: Just went from Render View to Scene View and 28 Mantra nodes where created. And that is repeatable. A new scene, same behavior with 2 Mantra nodes created.
Forgot to tell: I'm on Houdini 16.5.536.
Edit1: Now it's the same as with the thread starter; plenty of Mantra nodes get created when I go from Geo to Obj level.

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Point color won't get used by Principled Shader when bump is used

Thank you for your answer. Now with an extra Surface Color Node it works also with primitive color, although it only says point color. And now I know how to do a bump without a texture. Thanks.

Hi,
I had the idea of changing the color of the material through the point color and it even worked with the color attribute on primitives. But as soon as I plugged sth. in the bump operator, the point color no longer gets used.
So is there another way, to change the color of the material without having an extra material for every color?

Thanks twod for sharing your two cents.
As far as I found out, only server boards support up to 64GB DDR3 RAM - I know, a little late, that I checked that. And that ECC memory would cost me around 250€. And I don't see if it's easier now than later to find the right RAM. There are a lot of offerings on ebay. So I got myself a bundle with 24GB RAM for 210€. Will see if I raise that to 32 for 130€, when I want the exact same RAM - not cheap either, and not that much offerings, I have to admit. And then a 2GB graphics card for 70€.
Thanks so far.

Thanks again for the input. To be more specific: I set myself a tight budget. I want to spend 400€ on used MoBo, CPU, GC and RAM. And just want to squeeze out as much as possible. If I'm lucky I get a i7 4770k plus MoBo and 16GB RAM for 300€. And do I spend the remaining 100€ on a 4GB GC or spend another 30€ for RAM?
It's planed as a hobby, so for starters 16GB RAM might be enough and as I see me doing more fluid simulations, I'm willing to raise the RAM. But maybe even then not willing to spend the money for 16GB bars, if there is such a thing with DDR3. Was out of the business for some time now and am astonished of the jump in RAM capacity today.

Thank you! OK, I work on a 1920x1200 monitor. As I understand the requirements, 2GB is enough for that. So I better invest in more RAM for fluid simulations, right? Or is anything below 64GB not suitable for that? Redshift or Octane, for the time being not planed.

I'm looking into graphics cards and don't want to spend more than needed. So what is the use of GDDR? Can I have a higher poly count in the viewport with 4GB rather than 2GB?
Thanks for any input!

Hello,
I'm searching for new hardware to use Houdini. One of the requirements says, it needs to be a x64 CPU with SSE 4.2. Now I'm looking at the Wikipedia article Wiki SSE [en.wikipedia.org] and Skylake, p.e. i7 6700, is not listed under the supporting CPUs. And according to the skylake article Wiki Skylake only the Xeons support SSE4.2.
Does this really mean, that I can't use the i7 6700? Meaning I have to fall back on a Haswell 4th generation i7 CPU, if I don't want to spend the money for a Xeon?
Thanks for any clarification.
