I'm still looking for it. Did anything show up in the meantime?
Besides a maxed out rx2600 I've also acquired two rx2620s. Both with very recent dual dual-core, multi-threaded (hyperthreading), “Montecito” processors and with 24 GB RAM, two 10 Gbit ethernet adapters, 15K and 10K Ultra320 SCSI disks. One with a AMD/ATi Radeon HD5450 (PCI), so, a pretty interesting system for Houdini. (Both systems are normally used for VMS and, to a lesser degree, also a bit of HP-UX.)

Me neither, but to answer your question: no (plus, I didn't see any announcement of it either).

Dear Frank Firsching, I only noticed your post just ow, I'll test it out as soon as I can! It certainly sounds good, especially as there's still no official support. (What a shame.)

Does anyone perhaps have an archived version of Houdini Apprentice for Itanium (IA-64)?

Recently I've acquired an Itanium 2 (IA-64) based HP system. I've installed Windows XP 64-bit edition on it, just to see how it works. I was wondering, is Houdini for IA-64 still archived somewhere? I'd love to try it out.
Thanks in advance.

Is there any progress so far? If not, could we be notified if there's any in the future?
Thanks in advance.

Yes, I'm very interested as well. I purchased a SpaceNavigator recently, which is an amazing product (very well constructed too!)

I wonder if SESI has any plans to expanding to double float precision, the NURBS modelling toolset and (geometry) data I/O.

I indeed tend to use sub-division surfaces most of the time, although I still use NURBS very often. Therefore I hope that the NURBS workflow and toolset will be improved and expanded in the future, it's actually a great desire of mine.
Solid modeling tools/workflow would truly make a great addition; especially in combination of Houdini's procedural nature, fully scriptable too, just think of the possibilities! Houdini would then be even more complete.

Could you perhaps show us a screenshot of the geometry? It would make it easier to determine what's going wrong.

I really wish SESI would improve the NURBS modeling SOPs. In particular the SurfSect and Round SOP. I still prefer NURBS for a lot of modeling, but sometimes Houdini just won't do and I have to resort to other packages for (NURBS) modeling.
Also, it'd be nice to see some kind of solid modeling implementation. That would be a very powerful modeling asset, especially combined with Houdini's procedural nature.

It looks very well made! Also, great article; I'm just done reading it, the emphasis on the use of Houdini was perhaps most interesting of all!
This will be, without doubt, an amazing showcase - to both the general public and CG artists, from animator to TD - of Houdini's capabilities and potential. From now on I can refer to/mention this whenever somebody approaches me about what and where Houdini was ‘used for’!

Technical Discussion » Benefits of AMD Athlon64 X2 under (32-bits) Windows XP?

I've read about people whom are experiencing problems with Houdini under both 64-bit Linux and Windows XP.
I myself am a proud owner of an AMD Athlon64 X2 (dual core), though running under 32-bit Windows XP. My system being dual core with a nice clockrate and a great videocard it's already very fast, especially compared to my previous system.
What are the benefits of AMD Athlon64 (X2) processors under 32-bit Windows XP - or Linux for that matter - when running Houdini compared to 32-bit architectures? (Let's say speed-wise, aside the issues people may be experiencing currently). Because I wonder if there will be a major benefit if I switch over to 64-bit Windows XP.
Thanks in advance!

Houdini Lounge » Linux and NTFS: Is it safe?

I'd love to switch back to Linux and enjoy Houdini to the fullest extent with the best performance available for me, but I'm not quite so sure if that'll be a good idea. Mostly because, most of my drives are partitioned in the NTFS format.
I had Debian in mind, it being an old favorite of mine. But, would that be safe? Won't it damage anything? (I heard stories about writing onto NTFS partitions in/from Linux being risky). And, what kernels/Linux distributions offer the best - and safest - support for NTFS?
Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure since which version(s) of Houdini, but I - for some reason - don't seem to be able to properly playback audio anymore via CHOPs.
When I generate a waveform, or import a Midi-file, and try to play it back - via the Audio Panel - I only hear noise. This used to work fine for me in older versions of Houdini, though I can't say which versions since it has been quite a while ago.
Then, I'm not sure if it's Houdini to blame. Anyway, does anybody else experience problems with this as well?

I think I'm going for FAT32 then. I'm not really dealing with files greater than 4GB at the time being anyway. Even if I have to deal with them, I could then - in the future - always decide to set up a seperate Linux (or so) fileserver with a filesystem that'd properly support that.
Thanks for the advice and information JColdrick and peliosis, also for your reply at the od!

jds71Rusty? Not at all!
Whoa! I can't believe you guys found this (I didn't publicize it at all - I was a little embarassed because I'm so rusty, and I'm only doing this in my spare time).
The Joystick CHOP I set up is actually pretty cool, and I was really impressed with the small animation I produced (impressed because I'm not a talented animator). I'll try to post a small video of my muppet in action to give you a taste. I'm feeling all “Jim Henson”The Joystick CHOP is rather impressive and interesting - indeed, which immediately caught my eye - as you explained how you did it, with SDL and all. Too bad my laptop doesn't have a gameport, as far as I know (I have to check to be sure when I'm back home).
If anybody has any tidbits they want to put up on this blog, please feel free to contact me (either PM me in these forums, or post a response in the blog comments).I will and keep up the great work!

Sadly enough, it's been a while since I've used Linux (due to school and interning jobs that pretty much forced me to use Windows). Neither have I been using Linux much at home, mostly for the same reasons: the most important one being homework. So, in the meanwhile, I lost track and don't know how things have improved as far as - for example - NTFS and Linux goes.
I currently have a 200 GB harddisc, which I originally formatted as FAT32 so I could also use it and under with Linux (which I did). I've recently bought an extra, 250 GB, external USB harddisc. It was formatted NTFS by default, and there's nothing on it (yet). I'm not sure wheter NTFS support has improved. So, my question is:
What would you recommend me? NTFS or FAT32? What is better in terms of speed, reliability and Linux support?
Thanks in advance.
