Thought this would be a good simple starting Vex learning question as I branch out.

I have two curves with the same number of points with their own named group.

example:

Group:Curve_A (points 0-20)
Group:Curve_B (points 0-20)

What would be the most straight forward way to ( using VEX) connect a line from each point of CurveA to their corresponding point in CurveB.

A0 to B0 / A1 to B1 / A2 to B2 etc.

I'm guessing I'd start with a point wrangle with CurveA into input one and CurveB into the second.

Thanks!

Is there a way to make changes to the default “untitled” scene that loads when you first open Houdini? It's not a huge deal but I do find myself doing a lot of repetitive tasks beyond normal preferences to accommodate HToA and a couple of other workflow idiosyncrasies. Obviously, I could create and manually load a common HIP but I thought I'd see how lazy I can get.

Just installed 14.0.291 and the tab menu (as well as right click) still does not behave correctly and dips below the bottom of the screen. Is anyone else experiencing this? I have dual monitors on Windows 7. Is there anything I should be checking into as the culprit?

Houdini Lounge » DOPImport not importing

I used “Make Breakable” on an object for the first time. Works great in the simulation but the “dopimport” node in the object geometry doesn't reimport the broken geometry from the DOP Network for some reason.

I can set the “DOPimport” object mask to point to the “fracturedparm” in the DOP network and it imports fine but only the post-Breakage geometry. Likewise if I point to the object name it imports until right till the point it shatters.

What am I missing?

I'm trying to get an array of objects Copy SOP'd to the points of a grid to all orient or “look at” the same object or point in the scene. Was trying with stamp inputs but it was a bit over my head with this one. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

the Tab menu in my H14 keeps going dipping below the bottom of the screen keeping me from seeing or selecting items below that point. The only way to resolve it is to stretch the window and curser high enough on the screen to have room for all the menu items. H13 would always “sit” on the bottom making all options available. Anyone have any ideas why it might be doing that?

Houdini Lounge » Condensing scene level parts to a single object

I've spent a lot of time re-texturing some purchased models in Houdini for use with Arnold materials. However, now it's dawned on me that some of the FBX models that imported with a scene level node with various “object” parts linked together can't be instanced and manipulated as the objects level models can. Is there any trick that can reduce these finished models to a single object with materials intact?

I'm slowly getting the hang of expressions but I can't figure out how to express randomizing an instance object using an expression (or other simple node)

I have the following geometry I'm calling :
/obj/instance_card_01

I'd like to randomize “instance_card_01” through “instance_card_20”

I had hoped that I could just throw in an expression at the number

Any pointers?

Thanks!

Can anyone confirm that H14 works with the Orbolt store?

“Launch in Houdini” in the browser does nothing now.

When I try and “Synchronize Asset Library” from H14 it confirms Login in my browser but Houdini times out “waiting for the server to respond”.

Manually putting an OTL folder in my user folder does not list any of my assets either so I don't seem to have access to any of my previous assets.

I only began with H13 so this is my first major version update on my system. Is there a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP when making the transition that I may be missing?

Thanks!

Thanks. That's helpful. Now that I've gotten used to Houdini over the past year I'm finding it more and more annoying to work with nodes getting back to Nuke. I can't tell you how many times I've grabbed and wiggled nodes in Nuke this past week

Hey guys. I'm posting here first as the Foundry Nuke forums seem like a ghost town these days. Anyways, I'm setting up Nuke Studio in my studio space with Nuke and Houdini workstations side by side which will ultimately mean switching back and forth more frequently than before. Obviously, this will make the differences of two programs more pronounced and annoying in day to day work.

Has got me wondering if there are any interaction preferences I could (or should) be adjusting to make it more seamless going back and forth. I chose “Houdini” style 3d interaction and which makes a huge difference in ease of use between the two. Does anyone else have any tips or preferences that either make Nuke more Houdini-like or vice versa?

No one? Perhaps I could of posted the question more simply:

Is anybody setting up Houdini licensing from their laptop to the server over WAN and if so how is it working for you?

Thanks!

I see a few of you guys out there who seem to enjoy using Houdini on your laptops. I've always been curious about doing something like this ( along with Nuke). I'm assuming you're not wasting a Node Locked license on your laptop so I'm curious if you're actually taking these things out on the road much.

Currently, I have a Mac Mini acting as a license manager for all my LAN computers (rendering, plugins, apps, etc.) but never really got around to trying to set it up for external access through the static IP.

I know many of you have IT departments handling it for you, but assuming it is set up correctly, is the user experience pretty seamless?

Thanks for any thoughts, experience or pointers?

Just when I've started feeling a little more comfortable finding my way around Houdini RBD I'm starting to tackle Bullet integration.

The tutorials for Bullet I've seen are great for setting up shattering, etc. but I find I'm still unable to wrap my head around the best way to set up something as simple as a constraint relationship between two objects which is an important fundamental as I begin to convert some of my scenes for Bullet.

Would any of you fine people be willing to convert the simple Houdini RBD “Pendulum”example (attached below) into Bullet? I think a lot of us newcomers would be helped tremendously to have that example scene as a resource.

New problem. I can use rivets to connect the camera and constrain the camera's rotation by using another rivet. However, due to the way that Houdini wants to have the camera have a relationship to an “up” orientation I'm having difficulty figuring out a way to keep the camera from constantly trying to “roll” when it is supposed to be hard mounted to the simulation object (POV style).

Any thoughts?
