Houdini is awesome, but maybe it's strength is also it's weakness in a sense, at least in today fast moving world. While I notice Houdini used in a lot of movies, it's almost focusing on the special effect of it, usually those related to particles.
But then again, in today specialized world (even these day some people use Maya only for animating - they model in Silo and sculpt in ZBrush).
But nothing wrong with that, to each own I guess.

Is there any plan for a book on Houdini 11? Maybe a partnership with book publisher perhaps? I could use Houdini 11 Bible, Houdini 11 for Dummies, or Inside Houdini 11.

Thanks for the video, specially it's from Luxology (I plan to use Modo as non-hero model modeller).
What's great about the video is that now I know there's a personal render farm from BOXX (there was a personal render farm that certain renderer tried to push, but later back out due to certain issues).
Anyway, thanks for the answer, now the video allow me to learn something new, specially the shallow/depth aspect of CPU/GPU.

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » character cloth: real cloth or fake cloth? sim or anim?

I'm making a movie where the hero characters are human, so now I was wandering. Does movies such as Toy Story 3 (Andy), or the kids from How To Train Your Dragon, have a body underneath their cloth (so the cloth IS a cloth, although simulated or animated cloth is another thing)
Or the cloth IS indeed their body (there is nothing underneath), ala game models, except with more polygons and higher resolution texture.
Should the cloth be animated (via bones) or simulated (via cloth physic)?
Or is there no right answer?
If that the case, what technique does professional use on TS3 and How To TY Dragon?
Thanks. I'm stumped.

Which one is better if I want to use Houdini/Manta?
More CPU such as this:
http://www.workstationspecialist.com/product_range/ws_4024/ [workstationspecialist.com]
or more GPU such as this:
http://www.workstationspecialist.com/hpc/personal_super_computer/ [workstationspecialist.com]
With all the simulation, rendering, calculation, physic and all - I want to know which is the best hardware for the job.
BTW - while I'm sure application have used to multiple cpu setting, does software have adapt to GPU with 8 card inside a computer?

thanks for the answer, although I hope “one - man - full length - feature - animation” full of stuff won't bother them too much :-)

I thought there is an audio analyzer option that do the rought movement, so that you just fine tune it, like di-o-matic, voice-o-matic. Anyway, I'll try looking into the book. Thanks.

While I notice that Houdini 11 have everything including kitchen sink (Houdini support Ptex, but I still have to see it's texture painting capabilities - or workflow) what does Houdini have when it come to lip sync. I'm asking this since I came from IClone which have lip-sync capabilities.
It is strange not only there's not much book about Houdini, but not much plug in either. I hope that the release of apprentice version would change this.
Hey, if Unity licensee jump after releasing a free to try edition, maybe the same would happen to Houdini (http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/31290/Unity_Leaps_To_250000_Licensees.php) [gamasutra.com]
Anyway, what is the best way to do lip sync inside Houdini, caz I want to give it a test.

Is there going to be a cost for conversion of project you made with Houdini HD?
Is it legal if I use Houdini HD to learn while working on my personal indie project, and only buy it after I have enough money, even if it's mean that would be at the end of the production, of maybe, two years?
Would the conversion is free if I have two years worth of stuff to convert?
NOTE: I plan to make a one man 3d animation, ala Flat World, Idiot & Angels, Romeo & Juliet : Sealed With a Kiss.

hi, it's fable fox again. I'm doing some research on this app before picking one for my indie project (http://www.fablefoxisstronger.com). [fablefoxisstronger.com]
Anyway, I notice that not many online render farm supports Houdini. RenderrrrrrrTitan, RenderRocket, UltraRenderFarm, RenderFarm.net, RanchComputing.
Did any of you guys heard of render farm company that support Houdini 11? Thanks.

or you know, manga like rendering such as Apple Seed.
I love photorealistic 3d, but I love other 3d too (and I'm currently an owner of IClone 4.0, which is a real time animation tool).
I just think it's time for me to move to more awesome app - with real time rendering capabilities. not necessarily REAL real time, just mach studio pro real time or fuzzball realtime. you know, just a few second per frame, thigns like that.

I just installed Houdini apprentice, I came here from GarageGames link. I was shocked to find out such 3d app was available. I still remember the good old days of 3d max (which I study at college) where you have this stack.
But Houdini non-desturctive capability is mind boggling. Anyway, is there a real time renderer for Houdini? I mean, Maya have two already (mach studio pro & fuzzball). I know that Houdini can use any renderman compatible renderer - is there any real time renderer that I can plug-in into Houdini?
Like cartoon rendering, or just Mach Studio Pro quality rendering. But real time.
Thanks.
