Great suggestion. So I tried running Houdini in manual update mode as you suggested. However the first view in that file is of a giant building with many, many instances of a digital asset displayed.
So I kept crashing. And weirdly, the nodes STILL cooked when I opened up the file - the mode switched from manual to autoupdate for some reason without my interference.
Is there a setting saved with hipc files that would override the manual update setting?
Nonetheless I opened the file on a desktop PC, saved out a version without the building displayed and it ended up loading fine on my laptop. Thus you're right about the IntelHD graphics being the issue.
Thanks very much for your help (and if you do know what's going on with the switch to autoupdate on a file load, I'd be grateful for a solution.)!

Hi there,
I'm trying to open the building_v001.hip file from the Next Steps: Lesson 3 in Houdini FX 12.5 build 376. The file loads, the sops start cooking and Houdini crashes with the following messages:
A memory allocation occurred, probably due to insufficient memory.
6192: Fatal error: Segmentation Fault
I'm using a Lenovo X220 laptop with 8gb of RAM and Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. Nothing else is running.
Even when I escape out before the nodes start cooking, as soon as I dive into the window_maker digital asset Houdini crashes.
Given the amount of RAM I have, it seems like I shouldn't have a problem. Does anyone have suggestions?
Thanks!

Thank you SYmek. That's extremely helpful information. I hope someday rendering can move onto GPUs since they're so much easier to upgrade. For now you've definitely helped me with the decision to stay on my FX3800.
But it's also great to hear about your experience with the GTX580.

I posted this at the end of another thread in the technical forum but it's probably better to ask here.
When it comes to Mantra PBR IPR and Mantra PBR renders what makes the most difference when it comes to rendering speed? GPU or CPU? Or both?
Is there a good explanation somewhere about how offline rendering and IPR work behind the scenes when it comes to one's hardware? I've read the “understanding mantra” section in the help docs. But it doesn't help me with practical choices like upgrading hardware.
I'm now looking at upgrading my Nvidia Quadro FX3800 but as a newcomer I don't understand enough about how the rendering AND IPR work in Houdini 12 to make an informed decision on where to go with an upgrade.
For what it's worth in my other life with Vray for Maya all of my renders use HDR environment maps. I focus more on small numbers of highly detailed objects versus big environments in my renders. But in Maya I also spend a lot of time tweaking shaders in Vray RT.
So I guess I'm looking for advice what hardware will best allow me to continue that process efficiently in Houdini.
And by the way, I love Houdini so far. It's a blast to use. I'm trying to figure out if I can move my entire workflow over from Maya easily.
Thanks for any advice!

Thank you very much for the great suggestion. I didn't know about the control SOP node - super helpful. So I'm actually using that in the SOP along with the null.
I've hooked up an xform to the control SOP and am referencing my object's translation and rotation in the control SOP xform's translation and rotation.
Now I can see my pivots!

This is probably a super noob question but when it comes to Mantra PBR IPR and Mantra PBR renders what makes the most difference when it comes to speed? GPU or CPU? Or both?

For what it's worth, as a newcomer to Houdini I'm finding both IPR and offline rendering slower in Mantra than in Vray for Maya (hence my interest in hardware upgrades). But it could also be my general lack of experience with the software.
Thanks for any advice!

hi there,
I have a tube in a geo node with an xform node attached. I'm trying to change the pivot in the xform node and would like to be able to see the pivot better in the viewport. However the pivot shows up as a tiny white dot which is brutally difficult to track visually.
Any suggestions on how to address this?
Thanks!

Hi there,
Since downloading Houdini 12 apprentice I haven't been able to see the dotted lines that should show up when I use any of the selection tools. Is there a setting I need to adjust?
Thanks!

I've recently had a DIMM go bad on my Dell Precision 7400 (Xeon Quad Core 2.8ghz Nvidia Quadro FX3800) and am thinking about upgrading my memory.
For $800 I can go from 16gb to 32gb. I'm mostly using Houdini for rigid body simulations and rendering.
Can anyone comment on whether or not I would see a notable difference? I know it's a subjective thing but I'm a noob to Houdini and would love some general guidance.
Thanks!

Thanks very much - the PQ tutorials look fantastic. I'll try them.
Also, question on the webinars. For those of us who can't be available, will they be posted somewhere?

As a Maya user now jumping into Houdini I'm wondering if anyone can suggest a specific learning path AFTER one has watched the excellent Go Procedural videos.
I realize that there are tons of videos here at SideEffects as well at cmiFX, 3DBuzz and Digital Tutors. Most seem to reference Houdini 9. And most are pretty specialized.
Since everyone has limited time in their lives I was hoping folks here might have a few suggestions on a string of paid or free tutorials for someone who needs to get up to speed fast but doesn't want to miss key fundamentals of Houdini 12.
I'd like to watch every Houdini video on the web but that's proving impractical .
Thanks in advance for your advice!
