I work with a small team at Lockheed Martin that is doing computational design and computational engineering work (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computational_engineering). We're solving a broad range of intriguing product design and engineering problems using cutting edge techniques. Houdini experience is a considerable factor in the candidate selection. Note the ability to get a United States security clearance is a requirement (US citizenship among other requirements).

We're doing some really exciting and novel work. Check it out please. Especially if you're looking for a change in your career that utilizes existing skills in new ways. I'm happy to answer any questions that I can. Find me on LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/vfxluke/).

The team I work with has an opening. Feel free to ask questions and I'll do my best to answer.

Some of the projects we've done in the last few years are linked below. Most of the work isn't public but it's challenging and rewarding work.

I have the same issue, the frame rate on OS X 10.6 with a Radeon 5770 is virtually unusable in Houdini. With the most basic scenes I get one or two FPS. I know the Radeon 5770 isn't a blazing card but I've used worse graphics cards on more complex scenes and had no issues at all with frame rate on Linux and Windows. I thought it might be just me or something with the particular workstation, but maybe it's more widespread than just me.

Digital Tutors has some new content for Houdini users in their Creative Development series. The tutorial is called Creative Development: Voronoi Dynamic Fracturing in Houdini with Luke Olson. This tutorial covers dynamic fracturing starting in the context of dynamic simulations, then using dynamic fracturing building blocks to visualize fracturing without the need to simulate anything and other tip and tricks.

Thanks for the news! I'm also a Ubuntu user and am curious about what in particular is not working with Ubuntu 9.10 and Houdini. Before reading this I was planning on upgrading to Karmic at home, hopefully there are workarounds of some sort. Cheers!
