So it's definitely a limit with the ramp parameter that it cannot be > 1?
From a user point of view this is a bit weird. When setting up a ramp that corresponds to a distance it would be really useful if the ramp parameter is the actual distance, not some normalized version of distance

Hi all,
I'll get straight to it…cell division - how would you do this?
I'm liking the finite element solver a lot, but I'm no where near familiar enough with Houdini to be able to use it properly I think.
Here a good example of the kind of thing I'm looking to replicate:
http://www.nymus3d.nl/portfolio/121 [nymus3d.nl]
Any ideas would be most welcome, as I'm a little stumped

Hi all,
I find it difficult to believe that this can't be done, but I cannot find anything about this anywhere.
I'm trying to set a variable based on distance to the origin and I thought a ramp parameter would work very well with this. However, the ramp position will not allow any value greater than 1.
Is this true? Why this limitation - I'll now have to add another variable to scale the whole thing which seems pointless.

Hi all,
I'm playing around with the FEM solver in Houdini non-commercial edition and I was wondering why it doesn't seem to cache. I can run the whole simulation, then press stop, but when I move the frame to another frame it will always recalculate. It makes it impossible to see what your simulation actually looks like.
I know that the non-commercial edition doesn't allow you to write any cache files to disk (please correct me if I'm wrong), but I remember it keeping the simulation you have just run in memory so that you can watch it baclk.
What am I doing wrong?

Ok, got over that hurdle…now I just get
"Error: Unable to read file "
The geometry is really simple too. I'm trying to load a few quads at the moment. Not really sure what to do next.

Any idea why the *.lwo files are just failing to read even if they are local?
Do you know what I need to do to be able to read files from the server?

Hi,
I'm trying to import some geometry from a mapped drive, but everything is greyed out and unclickable. If I copy the files to my local hard drive, I can click on them. I still cannot import .lwo files though - which is what I'm really after - as I just get a 'Unable to read file ' error.
Any ideas?

Ah, that got it. Though I swear I've tried using lower case in the past. Very strange. So the all caps syntax is for using the attribute value in expressions or something? I've never really been clear on this
Sorry if it's a daft question.

That's very useful to know, thanks.
Also, while you're here, I keep having issues with visualizing attributes. I want to know what the force is on each of my spheres. I open up the display options, add a custom variable with
Name: force
Label: force
Attribute: FORCE
I activate it and it doesn't show up. I've always had issues with getting Houdini to show attributes in the viewport, but now it never, ever works.

Ok that pretty interesting, thank you tamte.
So if I apply a force attribute to points, it will be read by any solver?
Is there a reason why applying a transform in the SOP solver doesn't work? The reason I tried it is because I have a tutorial series from Digital Tutors
http://www.digitaltutors.com/tutorial/535-Combining-Procedural-Animation-and-Rigid-Body-Dynamics-in-Houdini [digitaltutors.com]
..and this is the method used in there.

Hi all,
I've mixed a SOP solver with an FEM solver. I have four spheres and the SOP solver moves them towards a certain point, but I want the FEM solver to make them squish up against each other when they do, but currently, they just pop inside of each other.
I've tried upping the dopnetwork's sub-steps, but it doesn't seem to help for some reason
The ‘force’ with which the SOP solver will try to move the spheres towards the point is controlled by a parameter called ‘amp’ located in:
AutoDopNetwork > sopsolver1 >foreach > calcs
The target point is defined in there too.

I think you made the Dynamic simulation for a simple sphere_object1 first ,Then you changed your DOP network manually and used rbdfracturedobject1 !!!
Most likely. Now…I just need to get this to work with solid objects somehow…

That got it! I knew you'd come to the rescue Joker
I guess I changed the ‘single object’ option by accident, but I seriously doubt I changed the path of the object mask.
It's quite annoying for me, when I'm trying to debug this kind of stuff, that I cannot click on ‘Object Mask’ and see what
`dopobjscreatedby(“/obj/AutoDopNetwork/rbdfracturedobject1”)`
actually evaluates to, like I can with other expressions.

Hi all,
I've got a simulation and all looks fine when I'm in the DOP network, but when I go up to the geo level, I see nothing.
The DOP import was all handled by the shelf tools, so everything should be set up correctly. There are no warnings now, but I did have to restart Houdini as the dopimport was giving me a warning before about ‘no DOP object names specified’.

I was just wondering if there was any way of doing this without using an ‘outer container’ geometry that all the cells squeeze up against.
What I'd really like to do is to copy the cells onto points and then get the cells to try and stay on those points as much as possible. Is there some way to force each cell towards its original copy location?
