I imported an FBX file which has Nurbs and then Polys of the Nurbs which got converted automatically on export.
I am trying to Extrude the flat surfaces using an Extrude SOP but the extrusions go in opposite directions on the same surface. I can't seem to isolate which surface is a U surface and which is a V surface but I can see that this is the case when I append a Carve SOP and toggle-checkmark each box.
How can I make my Nurbs surfaces uniform? I'd rather work with Nurbs until I NEED to convert to polys.
Sincerely,

Thanks G.
That works somewhat. If there are other NURBS operations that I want to perform on the geometry howevery I have to convert from polys back to splines and that seems to be problematic. I'll have to figure out a hack to simulate what I want. Don't worry, I'll figure it out from here. I was just unaware that cookie or hole only works on polys. In M _ _ _ you can perform Boolean operations on Nurbs as well as Polys.

Dear Readers:
I am experiencing difficulty with the Cookie and Hole operations. Neither of them give me the result I am expecting which is to take the eye out of the capital letter A so it looks like a correct letter A. If needed I can attach a file for reference. Any ideas what might be going wrong? I played with the tolerance and that didn't fix it.

Okay, I discovered something really interesting. Houdini 10 doesn't import EPS files properly, even after the %%Note string is added to the file in a text editor. Houdini 9.1 imports the geometry without a hitch, once the %%Note is added. How do I formally submit this as a bug report? How can I be expected to use the latest version of Houdini if such a huge bug exists in the software? I rely on EPS in my workflow.

Yes, there was a difference. I now distinctly remember it and got confused once H9.5 came out because this step was no longer necessary and that step was/is:
You have to open the EPS file in a text editor and in the first line of the EPS file you have to type “%%Note:” . I'm not sure why the note is needed, but this enables the EPS to be read into Houdini. There are some errant geometry which gets imported in and has to be deleted with the delete SOP using a certain numerical sequence.
But I suspect that this is the reason behind the buggy behavior of importing EPS files into H9.5 and H10.0 that I was experiencing in my other post about this subject. I will now troubleshoot those files as well to see if I still get missing geometry . . .
Thanks,
markerline

MMB says that “geometry cannot be cooked”
Pardon the expression but that cooks my goose because I have a lot of older hip files that used EPS File SOPs to import from Illustrator.
I even tried the old method of using AI CS1 instead of AI CS4 with a file exporting as EPS 3 (instead of EPS 8, 9, 10, CS, CS2, CS3, CS4) and this is not working. I will now try to export from CorelDraw and see if this makes a diff.

Dear Developer:
I'm not talking about 9.5 . There was a time when my version of Houdini 9.1 would import EPS files just fine. There was errant geometry which came in also and that had to be deleted using a delete SOP but I didn't have any problems with doing that. But now 9.1 gives a red flag on the SOP which indicates it can't read the EPS at all. What gives?

Dear Readers:
I posted a similar topic a couple of days ago where I was having trouble with EPS files and H10. But no one ever answered why earlier versions (Houdini 9.1 specifically) of Houdini on my machine don't seem to be accepting EPS files. Has anyone else encountered this problem? I would like to use illustrator curves in Houdini.

I don't know why but the “5” did not import. However I did my own test with those digits and created type then “Create Outlines” in Illustrator. All of the digits imported when I did that. Wish I knew what filter operation you used on the “5” so I could try it out/troubleshoot.

Dear digitallysane:
I tried the method with the circles. Both circles imported without problem. The second circle was actually a set of circles, one inside the other since I had done “Expand . . . ”>“Stroke” on it in Illustrator. Not sure what the problem is. I think it's because the paths that I had originally were not closed paths. But that is a sincere let-down on the part of Houdini because not all the paths you create will want to be done natively in Houdini. Sometimes it's easier to create paths in Illustrator and import them (i.e. lettering).

Dear Readers:
I am having problems with EPS curves exported as version 3 EPS from Illustrator CS4. I'm not sure why but Houdini 9.1 won't read them anymore–I get a Red Error display in the File SOP. Houdini 10 reads them but it does not read all of the curves.
Of a possible 16 curves to be read into the File SOP, only 10 made it through.
I used a workaround and ended up importing a DXF file which I got from another package's exporter, but this is a hasty and absurd solution.
Why isn't Houdini reading the files properly anymore?
Thanks in advance for any help on this issue.

Dear Edward,
Actually, I tried using a Facet SOP and consolidating points which I think is what Fuse does as well. In both cases this method did not work for me. If I Fuse AFTER the subdivide, points will get deleted and merged, but the result is unpredictable and not symmetrical.
EDIT: While writing this response and going back and forth between the post and the hip file I noticed I had duplicate geometry towards the beginning of the hierarchy. THAT was the root of my problem. Thanks for helping me to discover this. I now have what I want.

The errant geometry is the spikes on the ends of the “fingers”. This model is an adapation of the Y-Not water bottle.

Dear Readers:
I have some hexagonal tubes in a symmetrical arrangement, which I joined with a polyKnit and then closed up using a polyCap. The problem I'm experiencing is that when I subdivide the geometry the end areas where the caps occured are doubling up. I have attached jpgs for reference.
Can anyone suggest a solution? I'd hate to select prims one by one and blast them (I tried that but it's too tedious and can lead to selection mistakes).

Dear Readers:
I am having trouble rendering an object with alpha assigned in the point SOP ($CA*.4). In the OpenGL preview I can see through the object, but a ViewMantra or a Mantra1 render makes the object opaque.
What am I doing wrong? Do I have to use VEX or a specific SHOP instead?
