Here's some shots of a model I'm currently working on (based on tutorials at 3D Palace), all done with Houdini:
I'd personally like to thank Sidefx for putting out such an awesome piece of software. As a hobbyist (I've only been at this for a about 4 months or so) I really appreciate the Apprentice program and the opportunity to learn 3D with a high end program like Houdini! Thanks again Sidefx!

I've found Houdini pretty good at modeling, though I do wish it had a couple of other things in it. Most of the stuff on my blog has been modeled with Houdini with the exception of some ZBrush stuff. I've been able to follow along in Maya tutorials with very little hassle (specifically the Advanced Maya series at 3D Buzz, including the female character and spider - even using the sculpt tool on the spider ).
This is a link to some pics of some stuff I've done, after working with Houdini for several months:

si if i want, i can do something like that :
so, i want to say, there are no problems with a node ?
Absolutely no problem. And you don't have to do this procedurally either, i.e. you don't have to build it like a Digital Asset, with controls for all sorts of parameters, you can model it the same way you might in Maya.

Both 32 and 64. xp and vista…
Did houdini 8 use GTK? It was much better behaved under windows.
Not sure. I know 9.x does. Some of the earlier screenshots of Houdini (maybe pre 8?) look like it's using some kind of weird TCL/TK toolkit.

I wonder if that's a result of it using GTK under the hood. I have found GTK applications to be really nasty under windows, while running just fine under linux. I believe this has to do with the way the GTK port is implemented under windows.
Are you using it under regular Win32 or under win 64?
Cheers

I'm just wondering what the preferred set up when learning Houdini, and what one might migrate to once you start building more complex production level models/scenes/animations. Currently I have a Mac dual quad core 3Ghz with 6 GB RAM and a Nvidia 8800 GT. I've got OS X 10.5, Windows XP, and Vista 64, and Houdini installed on all three OS's (the Vista OS has the Houdini 64 bit version installed). Given this, is there a version that will run Houdini better than the others, or is it more or less of a wash?

Well I checked, and as far as I can tell I'm only rendering one job. I'm just clicking the render button on UI, which then brings up the mplay window/process. I'll see if it happens again tonight. Last night it was intermittent, shortly after I posted this topic it stopped for a while, then came back after an hour or so.

I'm running Houdini Apprentice 9.5.379 64 bit version, under Vista 64 SP1.
This is running on a MacPro 8 core, 6GB RAM, Nvidia 8800 GT
About an hour or or two ago I started to get various Houdini Console errors like this:
“No licenses could be found to run this application.
Please check for a valid license server host”
If I go to the License Administrator it seems to think everything is OK. Currently it seems as if this is triggered when I go to render. If I run the main Houdini program I don't get this error. Sometimes when I I type stuff in the help page in the browser, this, or errors similar to it, are triggered in the Console.
Anything I can do about this?

Well for starters try running 9.5.379, that's the official production build…
This is the version I'm using and I'm also running into buggy behaviour, such as the program locks when you try to call up help on a node (via a right click) or the help window appears, but never loads, or an error window or help window will appear but have no window frame so you can't move the or dismiss/close the window (PS - tell the devs this is probably a GTK related problem on Win32 since from what I can tell that's what Houdini uses on Windows).
I've also had problems running a polyextrude SOP where the program just freezes (this just happened to me).
I'm running Windows XP SP2 32bit version, 2GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT, CPU/box is Intel Quad Core Duo (8 core) Mac Pro at 3 Ghz.
also you may want to try the latest - 9.5.412. Unlike most software these aren't ‘beta’ releases, they have lots of fixes in them. Some people don't like running them in production, but certainly for learning you'll find lots of tweaks, new feature-ettes and fixes.
I fact, I would recommend 412, based on entries I see in the devlog.
Where on the download page is this? Under the main Houdini web page there's a menu for Apprentice and a “Download Apprentice” link. Clicking on this (http://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_download&task=apprentice&Itemid=89&Itemid=277) [sidefx.com] only shows a button for downloading Apprentice 9.5.379. Is there another way?
//edit
Turns out the downloads are here!
