Run a cloth sim and find a frame you want the initial state to be set to. Then add a fileDOP, and write out to disk that single frame (.sim).
Next go to your (Auto)/DOPnetwork and on the DOP container itself there is a simulation tab, go on to it, and the second parameter down there is an “inital state” section. Navigate to that single frame .sim file you created, and thats the initial state set.

your right probbins, the leaf springs are too chunky. Also I have put the drive gear on the rear axel, when it is actually sat on a seperate input shaft to the back of the rear wheels (found some better references).
Cheers!

Well its a start, but there isnt really much to see so far. Are those battlements seperate geometry, or are the modeled into the walls?
Also perhaps you can upload a single frame flipbook with the viewport set to flat wire shaded, so we can see the construction.

Hi Jeff,
I was originally thinking of this being a static scene. However once the modeling is completed, I shall be seperating the carriage into several elements for unwrapping/texturing, so rigging would'nt really be a difficult thing to implent….
…actually I might just do that, turn it into a small animation.
Cheers!

For a ring of debris, would'nt it be better to create a torus and re-size it to suite, and run that through an isooffset node as a fog volume, then scatter points with a scattersop based on that volume, rather than having all the points sat on a similar plane?
Even drop a measuresop and create an area attrib, then scatter the points based on that area….
…just a thought.

Hey guys,
With all this talk lately of Houdini's modeling capabilities, Ive been inspired to do some straight forward modeling in H10. So I got a few basic sketches of a scene, but nothing 100% or in colour yet. Perhaps once I do I will post them.
Basically it's a gloomy dark night in 1888 Whitechapel. A Daimler Motor Carriage parked under a street light (gas-lamp) on a cobbled street. A few buildings in the background, perhaps Jack The Ripper lingering in the background by a brothel.
Anyways I made a start into the Daimler model which will be the focal point of the scene. Im about 2 and a half hours into the model so far….
…more to follow.
Cheers.

Hey,
You on the 3DPalace forums?
Damn, i like the ring select feature
I'm not ‘moving’ as such, when i was FMX framestore said i would need to know both maya and houdini if i wanted to do dynamics and effects, so im learning Houdini. I still prefer maya for modelling but so far for everything else Houdini Rocks!
Yup.
A ring selection tool would be advatagoius indeed. I find using Houdini opens many doors, I find shut in other apps.

He means seleting the edges that flow across the face of a polygon, rather than down the edge of one. And afaik Ive never seen a ring select option.
Oh and nice to see you moving from Maya to Houdini pottsy!

Houdini is an excellent app for modeling. Once you get used to the workflow you will find it to be as fast as using Maya or Max (I have used both those apps for a long time).
Sometimes I do model in other apps and import into Houdini. My choice to do that is not because one appliaction is better than the other, its to keep my modeling skills frosty in the apps I do know.
What it all boils down to is the user. If you can model well, it doesnt matter what appliaction you use. If you understand how to use the tools in that app, your work will always turn out excellent. And speed comes with practice.

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » A couple of questions about smoke and such

1. I find that if this is happening it is usually the case of the uniform samples on the smoke container are not set high enough. I had a couldron-type mesh in a project, and the smoke passed through it until the samples was 100+, even with good collision samples in the mesh.
2. Use a switchSOP to switch at the frame of impact. If there is translation occuring on the shattered sphere, then you will need to import those translations onto the non-shattered sphere using a dop importSOP iirc.
3. As for this one. Sorry I dont really know enough for that kind of effect.
Cheers.
EDIT: If the sphere has thickness (which it should due to the shattering you have done), then things should be fine. However if not, thinking about it you might have to turn off “use volume based collision detection”, as there will be no thickness to the sphere to caculate a volume from.

you need to orient the tube to its z-axis in world space, as that is how to copySOP works.

I agree about Johners vornonoi fracture OTL, it is very good. As for the cookie sop method. Ive named each individual sop descriptivley enough for you to understand what is doing what.

You can adjust the frequencey, the rows and coloums and the other cutting settings, but dont hold up much hope. For an object as relitivley simple as a vase, I would use cookies by hand.

Or over the viewer pane, hit 2 for points, select the point, hit T for translate (or R or E, depending if you want to scale or rotate) and that auto-places an edit sop for you, then v-snap.
