So for the future, Apple seems like it will drop support for OpenGL and they also look like they are not going to support Vulkan either. If Metal is the only API Apple will be supporting then what would that mean for Houdini users on Apple platform ?

Also for the sun from the windows I recommend you to utilize the portal light. Each window should have one.

I am using it on imac with M395X without any issues so far. Having said that I must also add I am not a heavy user yet.

I have been using Houdini on Late 2015 iMac with M395X and haven't run into any issues yet. However I did not do an extensive test but only did some simple shading and lighting tests so far.

Did you try it by disabling the integrated graphics card and use only the dedicated one ?

Hi, for what it worth…
I'm runing some test from some times now with houdini on OSX and i found the obvious isn't OSX but ATI cards.
My old MacPro with a PC recent Nvidia card is WAYYY more stable than a latest 2015 macbookpro (the ones with two video cards ATI+intel). Houdini behave just like on linux ;-)
On the MBP even the selection “highlight” cause big troubles and lead to a hang of somes seconds.

I just replaced my Windows PC (GTX980) with the Late 2015 iMac. My current configuration uses El Capitan 10.11.2, 4Ghz i7 32 GB Ram, and 4GB AMD R9 M395X. So far I haven't seen any bugs/glitches with Houdini Apprentice. I will keep testing and report if I find anything bogus. But so far so good and I am really happy. The machine is very fast and silent, it doesn't have the heat problems the previous generation had, it doesn't throttle the CPU under sustained heavy load. And the screen is incredible. Color gamut of this new panel covers P3, once you work with this screen I don't know if it's possible to go back to a standard monitor
Hope this helps.
Hope this helps.

It shouldn't violate the EULA as long as you're not making money out of it. I am not a lawyer but I would think that as long as the reward you're winning from the competition is not money or does not have monetary value you should be fine.

I will start testing Houdini on Late 2015 iMac with R395X soon and will report any bugs found.

Thank you for this information Marty. You mention to have these issues on OSX+Nvidia, so would it affect the AMD too ? I have no background information about the bugs and fixes for AMD drivers so I was just wondering. For me using windows is less than ideal so I hope I can get away with using OSX.

I'd like to advocate for a dual-boot license whilst OsX OpenGL issue persist. Same license but can be used on OsX / Windows or Linux on the same machine.
RFE #70927
Example 1: Bones are almost not useable in OsX/Nvidia, too many crashes, whilst booting into Windows they work fine, so I'd like to do the bone work there and the rest in OsX where the other apps complete the pipeline.

May I ask if there are any outstanding issues related to the AMD drivers on OSX platform ? I am considering to use Houdini on a new skylake imac using Amd M395x graphic card and ElCapitan. I would like to know if I should expect any known issues on this platform. Thanks.

AMD's been very good at supporting their pro drivers in the past few years on Windows. Linux looks like it's going to get some good support in the near future (http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2015/12/amd-embraces-open-source-to-take-on-nvidias-gameworks/), [arstechnica.com] which has been a weak point for them. And lately they've been pretty good about responding to our OSX issues, which is still the platform with the most glaring issues.
We've also had substantially less AMD-specific issues over the past few Houdini versions, possibly because of our adoption of core-GL3.2, but also I believe the driver quality has improved.

I totally agree. Another fantastic alternative would be fast GPU rendering option in Mantra.
Gerbrand
Just in case there is still some life in this horse, I'm going to flog it
First of all: Indie is the most value for money I've come across next to blender .
At this price one can't really bitch about anything!
I do however feel that there is an opportunity for sidefx to create an option for a part of the market they currently don't fully cater for:
“Freelancers with their own software and hardware working in advertising”.
I operate in this space and the problem for me with indie is Mantra.
Mantra is a great render for large studios with render farms and departments dedicated to tweaking and optimizing the crap out of it.
Unfortunately I don't have that luxury.
On most jobs I'm required to deliver final renders with client changes within a week or two of starting the job.
In the past I've used Softimage with Arnold or redshift, to be able to do this.
The external render limitation in indie is what bothers me.
Right now I need to alembic everything out, import back into some other package and render there.
Every time a client makes a change, I get to export alembics again.
This is annoying and expensive, but somehow still faster than trying to get mantra to finish on time.
It doesn't make sense to me that we can render in other renders via alembic, but not inside houdini.
It just means that I now spend less time in houdini, doing things outside of houdini, the painful way, cause I can't render it in the ridiculous time most of my clients expect.
I've considered buying just standard houdini, but then I would still need to buy octane on top of that to get gpu rendering.
Also I need a solution for fluids and dynamics.
What I would like to see is a product between indie and FX, without the external renderer limitation. (keep the income limit)
This would mean that I can focus on getting really good with houdini, rather than diluting my skills between other packages.
I know that learning more software will benefit me in the long run, but the day has only so many hours, and my family has to eat.
I would gladly pay more for this option.
I've paid for 2 indies, and a indie engine, but even 3 mantras can't keep up with one octane/redshift/cycles for the majority of the types of shots I work on.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who would support an option similar to what I've described above if it was available.
Thanks
Gerbrand

Even though I too would love to get the best for cheap, I tend to disagree about the “less than 4K is limited” statement. I see a lot of big budget films are still being made on 2K.
RichardCulver
Times are changing. HD today is yesterday's 640 by 480.
Fusion has a free version, goes to 4K. That is what you call a limitation these days.
HD is already inadequate for even an indie today. For my personal project, I am not planing on rendering in HD. Are you kidding? That was hip 10 years ago. This is 2015. And I have no budget for this project.
It is not at all an unreasonable request to expect 4K. Beyond that, yeah that'd be excessive.

Mantra GPU render option would be amazing for the indie artists. Large scale projects would still prefer CPU but GPU accelerates small scale stuff immensely.
