Grab the Tangent SOP from the exchange here:

Radial vectors is what you want.
This, one of the first things I always install on a fresh install.
In fact, I'm always wondering why it doesn't make an actual release in Houdini, considering it's pretty useful. 8)

Before there was all the cmi stuff and most of the 3dbuzz stuff.
Drop node, check docs, check examples, the past version of Houdini docs and tutorial pdfs (ICE BREAKING!) and mainly browsing and READING(this is key) sidefx and odforce forums.
And just trying things and using the app.
Don't depend on having tutorials for everything

Just to add a little comment, since Graham seem to hit the point.
If you're going to be doing this with a large data set of pieces, I HIGHLY recommend you look into an HDK solution for it, it will speed things up ridiculously.

You gotta run Win64bit version, since you're running Win64(obviously), which should work fine.
I've had no issues running Houdini through cygwin.

It looks like your video card drivers aren't working right, or you don't have them properly installed.

Besides the books on them, they're all easily found on Amazon. A good site to check is:
http://www.fundza.com/ [fundza.com]
This has some good knowledge on RSL.

It uses it's own context called VEX, which is similar to Renderman Shading Language(RSL), so if you're familiar with that you should be able to use it.
Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Houdini's New ODE Physics...Blessing or Curse?

Ho boy, this is gonna be a fun topic.
First off, what are you siming that requires 20,000 objects? 10,000 alone is pretty high, specially for DOPs, ODE or not.
I suggest looking at some sort of work around, specially working in layers.
As for the ODE dop, it's a good step forward, though I would prefer a SESI supported Bullet DOP, since I think Bullet has a better feature set and a better future than ODE.
It looks like it's still missing a few features, but it looks like a few of them can be built from inside Houdini, but haven't had enough time to look into it.

Technical Discussion » Using python for OTL parameter control

Ack right, hadn't quite realised it was leaving my obj open.
Looks like I'll have to look into the switch sop and do some clever sop and parameter jumbling for this.
Thanks gang!

Got it, here's a little hip file. I had to use Editable Nodes inside the OTL to get it to work, but it seems I have to use an object itself, not a sop.

Hey gang, I've got an OTL I'm making and I'd like to be able to set a display flag inside the sop world using a button.
So far It works using python callback script using kwargs and then in the Scripts tab I create my display function for the specific node, it works fine on my master OTL. But as soon as I drop down a second OTL, that's locked, I get a locked/permissions error.
My question is, is there any way around this? Is there some sort of command or flag I'm missing, or is this just an illegal function in the grand scheme of things?
I know there's an opset command, but I hadn't given that a try yet, since I'm not sure how it works on an OTL.
Thanks!

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » $F in python

Because you're just doing that, defining ‘frame’ as the $F that you where on when you assigned the value.
if you want to make a constantly updated one, you have to make a call tot he timeline so it checks what frame it's on and it prints the frame number it's on.
With this you just made a specific assignment. Scripting 101.

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » save data channels .chan restriction in Apprentice?

Yeah I think chan is not doable in apprentice, keeps people from writing out data to use in other apps, which makes sense.
