Sometime next week I will probably get the video tutorial files in their uncompressed AVI format fromo SESI… I have offered to recompress them to a different format for those of us that are having problems with the reel media files…. Now there are 20 gigs… Yes 20 gigs of AVI files…. I spoke with peter yesterday about experimenting with different formats for playback on NT and Linux…. For that is one of the issues involved with deciding a format. Another important consideration, is the (files size / quality) ratio… I have been a long time MAC guy and almost always opt for quicktime…. Especialy sorenson for web delivery… Does anyone have a preference to the format??
I will probably start reencoding within the next two weeks… Then we will need to find a home on the web for the new tutorial files…..
Any input would be just great

Now that I have gotten past the objectstates tutorials the Reel media files in the other sections are playing just fine… Kind of unfortunate that most of the interface video tuts could not be seen… Still I was able to follow along with just audio..

Just started working on the apprentice CD this week and I finaly made it through OBJECTS STATES. I have to say that I could not get a single reel media file to play through from start to finish… I could hear the audio, but the picture would just lock up.. One of the files was so bad that the picture got stuck on the slate… I know that reel media was chosen so that linux users could see that material… Having surfed this forum and odforce.net, there are a number of peole that have stated similiar problems with the video files… I would love to see the video files converted and reposted to some server for others to download….
It is unfortunate that SESI employees went to all the effort of producing great tutorial videos that can not be viewed, due to the flakey nature of the reel media format. I have always had trouble with reel media both on MACs and on PCs. If the videos are still in a raw format, something other than reel media, like a vhs, I would be happy to convert the files to quicktime, avi, or mpeg… I live in santa monica and have a MAC at home with a targa 2000 capture board. I would not have any place to post the files. If someone has a server where I could post them to, I would be happy to upload the files.
I just think that after all the effort that went into the produciton of the apprentice CD, end users and newcomers should be able to take full advantage of the VIDEOS. The tutorials are so good that I was able to follow along with just the audio, but I have taken the intro class at SESI, four to six months ago. Anyway I would be willing to help get the files into other formats, if another user was willing to maintain the files on a server.

Wow your model looks just awesome. Did you start with a sketch or did you just sit down and start pulling the poly cage? I have followed alot of your post in this forum and it is nice to know that you are able to overcome some of the problems you were having. I just started with the tutorial files earlier this week and I am having a great time with Houdini.
I am glad to see that such a wonderful model was constructed in Houdini by someone who is relatively new to the software. Keep posting updates? Sorry I have no advice in regards to the rigging of the character, but I am confident that there is a robust solution to all the character set up you want to do…. Hopefully, someone will post some approaches… Keep up the great work Todd Dufour

Well I just got off the phone with HP and solved my first problem of the night. The battery in my machine was not seated properly and that was causing the blinking LED on my box. I have to say that my experience at least for the first three days of having my new HP has been great. Awesome customer support. Worth the extra money that the HP cost me.
I wanted to also say that I was a little intimidated by all the power users in this forum and the odforce.net forums. So far I the responses are so quick and I am so thankful to the people that have helped me so far.. Thank you Marc for your advice.
The problem with the reelMedia files is that I can't get objectstates1 to play through.. I kept trying to place the playback bar in the right place to see how to select cam3 in the other viewports.. But I was having redraw prolems anyway. Hopefuly the new nvidia drivers will make tonights session more enjoyable… Something tells me if David Rin*ner can keep dealing with all the little idiosyncracies then I can too….
Just out of curiosity why is there a need to press space bar + x to select a view in a 3d viewer pane instead of just a click or a mouse over?
My nvidia drivers just finished downloading so I am going to install them and everything will magically just work perfect.

I am a long time mac guy. After taking a class at SESI, I was so impressed with HOUDINI that I bought a new HP. I have little to no experience with the technicalities of the win2k OS, but I am determined to become a HOUDINI power user.
So what is active TCL and do I need it?

When I go to the Nividia web site to download the latest driver, there are several options.
One option is to get the latest driver which is 30.82. Another option is a driver that is next to the SESI Houdini. Which driver is the better bet :?: My main concern is to get houdini working the best it can :!: I just got my system on monday and have had some problems with it already. After data mining these forums and odforce.net, I have discovered that getting the latest drivers will probably fix most all of my problems.
I discovered that I need to make sure that I have service pack 2. At the moment, the most current service pack for win2k is service pack 3. Is it safe to install service pack 3?
Below are the specs on my system:

HP workstation x4000

Includes: Windows¨ 2000 Professional, 2.4GHz Intel¨ Xeonª processor, NVIDIA Quadro4 900 XGL high-end 3D graphics, 1GB PC800 RDRAM, 36GB Ultra 160 SCSI hard drive
I also have two sony 21" monitors connected to the Quadro4 900 XGL and a wacom tablet.

I am currently having issues with the reel one player locking picture and continuing audio. I read in a post that turning off sharpening may fix that. The other option is usiing reelplayer 8….
