Thank you Jenny.
By next release, you mean the 10.5?
Among the Docs related issues, would you consider adding some more details in some pages?
Indeed, while trying to learn Houdini I sometimes (hum, well, quite often I'm afraid) find the information I am looking for is not present, and it is quite frustrating because obviously we would expect it to be there.
If you plan to add some density to the reference, I can point out some places where I think it would be very helpful.
Thank you for your understanding.

Hello Jenny,
Sorry for my late answer.
I am not able to reproduce the error I mentioned in my previous reply.
While working with the documentation I have another bug though:
In the web browser where the documentation opens, enter a word in the search field (“output” for instance is a good example for that) and click on the Find button.
The first link, All, will have 627 results and when we click on it the first text line on the right is; Page 1 of 32.
When we click on Guide for eg, which has 27 results, we have access to the page 1 of 2. Unfortunately when we click on Next Page, we get back to the All section and the first line is Page 2 of 32 (instead of page 2 of 2). We then cannot access to a part of the results in the Guide section (or in any other section with more that 1 page of results)…
This appends on Firefox and IE 8.
Houdini Apprentice 10.0.595
Moreover, on IE8, there is a problem with the display: the results are down the page, below a whole block of white emptyness.

Thank you Jenny.
By using this node, can I specify the file format type? I don't see any file extensions listed in the “Show File Matching” dropdown list, in the Choose File window that opens when we click on Output File…
And when I export a .geo file from a tube, I get an error message at import (see attached image).
Do you have a suggestion for my previous question about nurbs export for Rhino?
Best,
Werwack
Suggestion:
To easily report error messages, may I suggest to implement a copy command as in Windows: when the error message window has the focus, doing a ctrl + C will copy all the window content in the form of text in the clipboard.

Thank you for the answers.
Is it possible to export nurbs so that I can use them in Rhino?
Small note about the help page:
In the page http://www.sidefx.com/docs/houdini10.0/io/formats/geometry_formats [sidefx.com] I have a strange value in columns Read and Write: most of the time it is written ✓ instread of an understandable value.
I use Firefox.
Thx
You can put down an output node at the end of your geometry chain and use it to save to diskHum, I don't find such a node. Do you have the exact name of it, please?

Hello,
Would it be possible to have a summary of the I/O capabilities of Houdini?
On the website, in Apprentice Overview section, many I/O formats are mentioned, but when I create a simple sphere and I go to menu -> File Export I see none of them, there are only FBX and Torque and both of them are disabled…
Is there a special setup to do to export a geometry? What are the export limitations? Is DWG supported?
What are the I/O differences between Houdini versions (Apprentice, Apprentice HD and commercial)?
Thanks a lot,

Thank you very much, I'll dig into those directions.
By the way, do you know if there is a way to convert a 3D procedural texture to a mesh or a particle field in Houdini?
I am trying to model sponges and that king of elements and my approach is to fill the volume defined by the texture with particles then convert them to metaballs to get the mesh.
Best,
Werwack

That's it, thanks a lot
I have the feeling that metaballs are very greedy…
Is there a way to optimize something to have a more accurate view of the mesh in the viewport with an acceptable processing time? As soon as I raise the lod value, the display framerate is tumbling down and the mesh quality is still very edgy.
Is it possible to also control their lod at rendertime?
Best,
Werwack

Hello,
I use a particle network to create metaballs. It works well when all the particles are around the emission location but when they get farther, some frames later, the metaballs seem very edgy and low res, as if the total nuber of polygons would always be the same in the scene, no matter the space taken by the particles.
Is there a setting somewhere to control the density of a metaball mesh? Can we have a local control on it or is it global?
Thank you very much,
Werwack

Houdini Lounge » Repport Bug page would need an Attachment field?

Hello,
I think it would be really helpfull to have a field to add one or several attachments on the page to repport H9 bugs. Indeed it is often clearer to join a screenshot and or a video and or a scene file to the bug we would like to repport.
So far we have to do it in 2 times: sending the bug description then sending the attachments by e-mail when we get contacted because our description may not be clear enough. It is not very convenient.
Thank you for your understanding

Hum, I only have 3dsMax installed, and I suppose I can use the MR version it provides. It is a satelite, does it make a differece?
Ok, so iIused the following file in H:
“C:\3dsmax8\mentalray\satellite\raysat_3dsmax8.exe”
I defined the MI_ROOT path in the environment variables to the same folder, because the rayrc file is in it.
The MR render node in H stays red. I also tried to put the content of the rayrc from the folder right above this one (because there are 2 such files in Max), and still red.
- Are the shader descriptions refenreced by that file only for 3dsMax?
- there are already some shader nodes for MR in H, how are they linked to MR if the declarations are provided by the user?
- is there a log in H saying that something went wrong and why the node cannot be used?
Thank you
You specify the executable in the ROP parameter Command (or sth likethat, don't have H in front of me now). Simply choose the executable ray3 from the file picker.

Thank you Rob,
Indeed I have some bugs from time to time and I submit them, but I am sometime wondering if I am the only one to have them. I test Houdini on 2 machines though and try to mention if it could be local bug.
On the website I have not found a button or whatever to add an attachment to the bug
So I have one, for example, that I will explain here cause a scereenshot is better than a long talk.
Houdini V. 9.0768
When clicking on the help on a tooltip for a function in the Parameters Pane I get an error message and the help page is not found.
I have it on 2 completely different computers and internet access settings.
Hope that help

Hello Diula,
I also would like to use Mental Ray, but your explainations are a bit fast for me
- How do you specify the executable to the MR ROP?
- Where is located the MI_ROOT variable?
Can you please add some details?
Thank you very much

Hi Matt,
Guess what? It's working!!
I am not sure exactly of what made the difference though, but here it is!
After the few tests above I desinstalled the Python dev environment I had on my machine, removed the environment variable and rebooted.
The 123.py script is not used.
It is really easier now with the doc: very helpfull, and the possibility to load an example scene is really a great feature!
Thank you very much for your help and the one of the team. I hope this pb doesn t append to too many users…
By the way, a quick question: is there a bug repporter integrated in Houdini? I crashed a few times, sometimes without a message saying “File saved…”. Not sure to be able to repproduce…

Hi Matt,
indeed I have a few Python environement variables set. I have the Python devkit installed for a long time, though I've not use it so far. Beside the path related to the IBMTOOLS folder very likely comes with my computer:
PYTHONCASEOK: 1
PYTHONPATH: %SystemDrive%\IBMTOOLS\utils\support;%SystemDrive%\IBMTOOLS\utils\logger
The 123.py script is called at Houdini launch, but it doesn't like it (cf picture)
I then removed the 123.py file and changed the value to 0 in the env variables but it didn't change anything. So I forced the value to 0 in the __init__.py file, as follow, just for the purpose of the test, and then the error is a bit further (image 2, NullTranslations pb).
…
# restrict this check to certain platforms. See PEP 235.
import os
if ‘PYTHONCASEOK’ in os.environ:
PYTHONCASEOK = 0
I reverted the changes. Do you have another suggestion?

Hey, all the latest versions are there! Thanks a lot, I didn't know that
So now I have the version 9.0759, the latest available on XP 32, and unfortunately I still have the problem (and the same message)
Could it be because the integrated Firefox is not configured for my internet connexion? Is there a way to switch from the embedded version to the one I use? Or to force it to use my preferences located in the Application Data directory?
I try to reach a preferences panel for the embedded brozser but I didn't find anything helpfull.
