Paint mask while viewing the result?

Hi!

I scattered points an used a Copy-to-Point to instance a geo (with Pack an Instance). I'm using the AttribPaint sop to paint a mask. The wrangle deletes any instances with a f@mask below 0.5.

My problem is when I view the wrangle while painting the mask. It doesnt show the result, it shows all instances as visible. I tried to toggle the Paint on Displayed Node on the Paint node but its bugged: As I paint I can see random instances disapear or appear. it doesnt match what Im painting...

I tested this in H19.5 and H22

Because as far as attribpaint is concerned all the instances exist. Even if you have the display flag on a different node, selecting the attribpaint and entering the state will template the geo the attribpaint is operating on. This seems like normal Houdini behavior to me.

My question would be: is there a reason you are masking / culling after the copytopoints instead of before? This seems odd to me and I feel like you'd have a more intuitive experience if you rearranged your network a bit.

Hi!

I'm replicating a situation I end up with. I already have the packed primitive instances (can't change that part) but I need the paint node to remove some.

All the instances showing is normal behavior, as you were saying. The "Paint on Displayed Node" toggle was made exactly for my situation but its super buggy (as you can see in my previous images).

Okay fair enough if you're constrained to this workflow, but personally I still wouldn't expect this to work the way you want due to the point numbers constantly changing every time a point is deleted, that's bound to cause confusion.

Would something like this work for you instead?

Its not perfect but it does 95% of what I'm looking for. And its super simple so, I think I'll be good with that option!

Thanks!
