I did a search but couldn't find an answer…
When I hit ‘ to enter “pivot state” and change the position of the pivot is it possible to make that change permanent? So when I re-select an object I don’t have to re-position pivot again.

If you're transforming an Object node, use the Insert key instead.

oh, now just to find ‘insert’ on laptop keyboard…

Thanks anyway… I think I'll have to buy a proper keyboard soon.

If you right-click over the handle, you can get at all the functionality without using the hotkeys. If Insert doesn't work for you, I think the double quotes (") key also works.
