The unrecognized opengl version message is safe to ignore. Quite a few apps do this w/ opengl 4 enabled drivers.
The only advice I have is to try possibly older ati driver versions. (or newer if you're not using the latest)

I had real problems with Ubuntu and i'm on Debian 64, the install went great and Houdini works great. I have an nvidia card with proprietary drivers.
