Does this change the splash image or does it do something else?
I tried setting it to the full path to Mandril.pic but no difference.
anyone know?

it works for us with tif and jpeg. (on linux)

Mandril.pic looks to work on my 12.0 linux work box.
but didn't seem to take on my 12.1 linux home box.

looks like it is not works in Apprentice mode.. otherwise it should work well.
